Grieving with Others
Through tragedy we learn that God is “close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). We learn that when bad things happen, we can get through them; that knowledge then gives us hope the next time tragedy strikes. God gives us the strength to move on and gives us other people to help us, which is critical because grief can only be accomplished in the context of relationship. We need others to hold us as we go through the process of letting down and letting go because we must have something good in hand to be able to let go of something bad. It is a little like being a trapeze artist: We can only let go of one trapeze if another is in view.

Grief is God’s way of getting us through and past things. And we need others to help us do that. Therefore the Bible says to “mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15). If we do that, people find out that it really is true what Jesus said: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

Since grief is absolutely necessary for successfully moving through life, and since it is an essential part of the growth process, we have to make sure it happens well in our life and in the lives of those we love. The only way it can happen well is in relationship — the way God designed it to work. It is the reason tear ducts are in the corners of the eyes. Someone’s grief should be evident as he or she looks into the eyes of another person. It is a relational process. Relationships provide care, support, structure and the balm of love to heal hurts. Get people grieving correctly — with other people — and they can get on with life. “A sad face is good for the heart” (Ecclesiastes 7:3). Grieving cures pain.

Psalm 34:8-14

The Comforter of the Brokenhearted
God’s Story
Psalm 31: Enemies are conspiring to take David’s life. He begs God to deliver him, knowing that God has stored up good things in abundance for the people who trust in him.

Psalm 32: For a while David didn’t confess his sin to God, so God’s heavy hand of conviction rested on him. But now David confesses and sings a song about the goodness of God’s forgiveness.

Psalm 33: An unknown author composes a declaration song: Trust in the Lord. God reigns over the world with love, has his eyes on every person and delivers those who trust in him.

Psalm 34: “Taste and see how good God is!” David proclaims. God is the Protector of the righteous.

Psalm 35: David needs the Warrior King. His enemies are too strong for him. He asks God to ensnare them in the same traps they’ve set for him.

Psalm 36: God’s unfailing love is priceless. The psalmist has experienced the feast at God’s house and has drunk of his “river of delights.” The fountain of life springs from the Lord.

The King’s Heart
Hardship has a way of making people run. Pain is uncomfortable, awkward. It’s a reminder of our powerlessness.

But “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). God dwells in the pristine perfection of heaven where life is constant, abundant joy. He has no need to burden himself with our hurts. Yet in our heartaches, God draws near. It is what he chooses to do.

God is working for good in whatever we’re facing. But even though he’s aware of that reality, he doesn’t minimize or devalue our pain. He comes close. He stands with us in the midst of it. For many heartaches, drawing near is the act of deepest comfort.

The One who thoroughly knows how good life is supposed to be really, truly understands our grief. He, more than anyone, knows how far things have fallen. The comfort that he offers in his closeness comes from a heart that understands — far more completely than we do.

If you’re hurting, if the world has stepped on your soul, hear the words of the God who loves you: I’m here.”

Insight
Hebrew writers often used a literary technique where they put the most important content of the psalm in the center. In Psalm 34:8 – 14, David focuses on God’s goodness (verse 8), explaining that people who follow his good ways (verses 13 – 14) will live many good days (verse 12). God wants us to live in his goodness. That is his intention.

God Comforts You
All of us need comfort once in a while. Maybe it’s an illness that sets us on life’s sidelines. It might be the pain of hurt or betrayal that causes us to want to withdraw into our shell and never come out. Maybe it’s the grief of loss that makes it feel like life is just not worth living anymore.

We search for comfort in all kinds of places — escape into the latest TV sitcom, food, the Internet. Maybe we have some caring friends who listen and try to understand, but we can only lean on them so much, for we know they have their own lives and responsibilities.

So where do we turn for comfort? Today’s verse tells us to “shout for joy” for “the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on afflicted ones.” That’s you. And that promise is for you. The Lord will give the comfort you need. Turn to him and pour out your hurt in prayer. He is always there for you.

God’s Promise to Me
*I am there for you in your time of need.

*I will give you comfort.

*I will comfort you and have compassion on you.

My Prayer to God
I need your comfort today, Lord. The hurt goes deep. I need to know that there is purpose for this pain; I need to know that it will not be wasted. I need to feel the comfort that only you can give.
