“Learning Lessons the Hard Way”
Psalm 30

It is rather providential that on this Father’s Day we find ourselves in a passage that deals with the theme of God’s discipline of his children. In Psalm 30, David praises God for how he delivered him, not from enemies, but from discipline for his own sin. In this David gives thanks for how God has restored him through several redemptive reversals.

God’s corrective discipline is not something we often consider and it is a painful experience to be sure. However, remember that through the gospel we too have enjoyed these same redemptive reversals. Therefore, though we may not enjoy discipline, we know that our Father will turn all our sorrows to joy in Christ.

As you read and prepare for tomorrow, meditate on the imagery and emotional language David uses to describe his experience. Consider your own need for correction and how you have responded in the past. Pray that we would respond as David did and that we would know the joy of the Lord’s favor in a more tangible way.

“Destination Suffering”
Acts 21:1-16

Have you ever faced a time of what you might consider ‘God-ordained suffering’? What do we do in those situations? Do we avoid it at all costs? Have you ever had to watch a fellow believer enter a time like that? What do we do in that instance? Do we act to save them from the pain ahead? And, have you ever asked yourself ‘what is God’s role in suffering?’ Didn’t He die on the cross so we wouldn’t have to suffer?

This Sunday we talk through Paul’s final leg on the journey to Jerusalem; the place that will act as a gateway into years of imprisonment and his eventual martyrdom. While we do, we will attempt to answer the above questions in order to learn how to navigate this inescapable state that every Christian is bound to enter sooner or later. A state where the glory of God is revealed in a potency that can’t be found in the less rocky terrain of life.

As you ready your heart to receive God’s word, meditate on the suffering in your life and the suffering you see around us in this world. Ask God to reveal to you the path through that suffering that would reveal His glory the most in order that His Spirit may enable us to walk it.

“The Painful Cost of Leadership”
Acts 20:17-38

This week we read Paul’s farewell speech to the elders of the Ephesian Church. It is a tearful goodbye as Paul’s pastoral heart is made evident. His primary concern is for the church to remain healthy in his absence. What this will require is for pastors to follow Paul’s example and to heed is words of exhortation. They must be have the character and obey the call to shepherd the flock of God faithfully. And yet the whole church shares a piece of the responsibility to see the flock protected.

Thus, we must all carefully consider Paul’s words here that we too will in some encounter the painful cost of leadership. As you read, think on how this text is relevant to you in whatever leadership you have been entrusted. Especially to you fathers, consider how these words call you to embrace the cost of leadership to shepherd the little flock given to you

The Apostle to the Gentiles at Work
Acts 20:1-16

This week Paul begins the long voyage back to Jerusalem to conclude his third missionary journey. We also read about an averted tragedy, that Paul was used by God to resurrect a young lad named Eutychus. He fell asleep and then fell from a window in the middle of church!

Despite being an easy opportunity for jokes, this story is not about the importance of staying awake during a long sermon. In Acts 20:1-16 we are going to see how the ministry of the Apostle Paul is both a model for us and how his ministry was validated.

As you read the sermon text, consider the example we have in the apostles’ ministry. Pray also that we would be encouraged by the hope of new life in Christ. See you tomorrow!

You ever meet a couple who just makes you want to follow Jesus more?

Not because they’re flashy.
Not because they’re famous.
But because there’s just something deeply steady, wise, and faithful about them.

Tomorrow in Acts 18, we meet a couple like that: Aquila and Priscilla. Ordinary Christians who quietly gave themselves to the long work of strengthening others with the Word of God — and God used their faithfulness in extraordinary ways.

In a world obsessed with platforms, influence, and visibility, this text reminds us that some of the most important kingdom work happens quietly. Around dinner tables. In living rooms. In conversations after church. In opening the Bible with someone one-on-one.

This Sunday, we’ll see how Jesus strengthens His people through His Word, His Spirit, and ordinary saints who are willing to faithfully invest in others.

🤔Two things to think about before tomorrow:
• Who has God used to strengthen your faith over the years?
• And who might God be calling you to strengthen right now?

🙏🏾Two things to pray about:
• Pray that God would deepen our love for His Word.
• Pray that God would use our church to raise up faithful men and women who strengthen others for generations to come.

If the local church is a family… at some point, you stop standing at the front door and come inside.

That’s really what church membership is about: joining a faith family, committing to a certain people that we live out our identity as the family of God together 🙌🏿

Not joining a club. Not adding your name to a list. But committing yourself to a local church family—to worship together, grow together, serve together, and follow Jesus together.

The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone or at a distance. Jesus gives us the local church so that we might be known, encouraged, corrected, cared for, and equipped to persevere in the faith together.

Have you ever shared your faith and you thought it went well … only to find out later that it wasn’t received well?

You got pulled aside by your boss, reprimanded, or maybe got a text that a said it wasn’t appreciated?

Heartbreaking.

Then, the next time you feel like you should share the gospel, you remember that last time … and think, “Maybe I don’t want to get into that again?”

You’re not alone.

In fact, that’s what our text is all about this week in Acts 18 as Paul feels that pressure.

Opposition is rising, the cost is real… and it’s then where Jesus meets him and says:

“Do not be afraid… keep speaking… don’t be silent… I am with you.”
(Acts 18:9–10)

This isn’t a call to be fearless — it’s a call to be faithful.

Because Jesus hasn’t changed. He’s still with His people. Still building His Church. Still using ordinary lives to do it.

And that’s what we are going to see this weekend.

Two Things to Think about:

1) Where are you tempted to stay quiet right now?

2) What would it look like to take one step of boldness?

Two Ways to Pray in Preparation:

1) That Jesus would steady your heart when fear creeps in.

2) That He would use you to open doors for the gospel this week.
