Happy Easter!

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto since once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead unto sin: but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

🙂 Happy Feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, Patroness of Missions!

It was due to the pious petitions of one of our very own local Catholic missionaries, Venerable Ovide Charlebois, that St. Therese was declared the Patroness of Missions.

In 1917, Ovide Charlebois was the missionary Bishop of Le Pas in Manitoba (he regularly travelled by canoe and dogsled to minister in remote communities). The Oblate Mission in the community of Hudson Bay was sadly about to be closed by the Oblate superior, so the local priest had his parishioners pray a novena to St. Therese. After the novena ended, the superior decided that the Mission would remain open. The community credited this miracle to the intercession of St. Therese.

Bishop Charlebois heard of this miraculous novena and was so moved by this that he sent a request to Rome signed by 226 missionary bishops from all around the world to designate St. Therese of Lisieux as the patroness of all missionaries. Finally, ten years later, on December 14, 1927, Pope Pius XI proclaimed St. Therese the Patroness of Missions!

🙂 Today marks the anniversary of a fascinating event in the history of Anglo-Catholicism in Britain.

On August 30, 1880, a Marian apparition occurred at the Anglo-Catholic Benedictine monastery of Llanthony in Capel-Y-Ffin, Wales. Although the Holy See has neither approved nor condemned this apparition, it is nevertheless an important event in the history of the Patrimony!

On the evening of the 30th, four choir boys were playing in the meadow below the monastery buildings when they were startled to see a female figure apparently gliding across the surface of the field. They identified the figure as the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the apparition was seen on three further occasions over the following two weeks.

Devotion to 'Our Lady of Llanthony' quickly took root in the region. The anniversary of the first apparition was chosen as her special festival, when annually the abbey church is crowded with pilgrims from far and wide. The special annual pilgrimage day ends after Evensong with a procession to the site of the 'holy bush.' This was where Our Lady had been seen to alight; eventually a commemorative statue of Our Lady was erected on the spot.

In 1913, the monks of Llanthony abbey came into full communion with the Holy See of Rome, and one might wonder how much the earlier apparition as well as their deep devotion to Our Lady had to do with this! 🙏

Happy Assumption Day!

"The holy Prophets, Priests, and Kings of former times rose again in anticipation of the last day. Can we suppose that Abraham, or David, or Isaias, or Ezechias, should have been thus favoured, and not God’s own Mother? Had she not a claim on the love of her Son to have what any others had? Was she not nearer to Him than the greatest of the Saints before her? And is it conceivable that the law of the grave should admit of relaxation in their case, and not in hers? Therefore we confidently say that our Lord, having preserved her from sin and the consequences of sin by His Passion, lost no time in pouring out the full merits of that Passion upon her body as well as her soul." 🙂 Happy Lammas (Loaf Mass) Day!! 🍞🥖🥐

Lammas Day (from Old English hlāfmæsse, "loaf-mass") is a holiday that draws our attention in a special way to the Holy Bread of the altar which really, truly, and substantially becomes the Body of Christ at the Mass. It is a festival to mark the blessing of the First Fruits of harvest, reminding us that Our Lord is the First Fruit of the Resurrection. On this day, it is traditional to bring loaves of bread to the church to be blessed by the priest and consumed by the faithful after Mass. It is also customary to have processions to local bakeries where the priest will impart a special blessing to the bakers.

Today, when you break bread together, or when you go to Mass, remember the meaning behind today's festival. "And Jesus said unto them, I am the Bread of Life..." (John 6:35)
