Not all news is doom and gloom.

Derek Pfaff of Michigan was left with devastating facial injuries from a gunshot in 2014. For a decade he could not eat normally, breathe through his nose or smile.

In February 2024, surgeons at Mayo Clinic performed a face transplant that took more than 50 hours and replaced about 85% of his face. They reconnected nerves so he could blink, swallow and smile.

Pfaff says the surgery gave him a second chance at life, and he now speaks about su***de prevention.
