Ever heard of Hygge?
It can be used as a noun, adjective, or a verb.
The word comes from a Norwegian and Scandinavian word meaning “well being” and it’s an old Scandinavian concept that is used to describe a moment or feeling that is cozy, special, or charming.
It brings to mind pleasant, engaging, mellow, good-humored, safe, and snug environments.
It’s comfort and pleasure combined.
It’s The great hall in the longhouse with all the floating candles and the open fire with all the sounds and smell from fir, pelts, wood and the boiled ham. Or even the feeling while sipping on the mead with your friends.
Hygge is often associated with lighting candles to make a place feel warmer.
The idea also embraces cabins, wool, homemade crafts, knits, and fireplaces.
The Norwegians and Swedes up here in the north connect it to nature and sometimes to spending time in the snow while we "Gå på tur".
It’s the little moments that count. We all know that. But how often do you stop and smell the roses?
How many of these moments do you really have in your life?
Are you over-worked? Overstressed? Distracted?
Then do as we do and as our ancestors did.
Find your Hygge and enjoy the moment right there when it happens.
It's always the small things that counts and makes a difference.
And for me to sit out in the deep snow at a bonfire or under a snow-covered fir-tree with hot coffee in my kåsa beats every psychologist or chemical pill on Midgård.
Relax and you will feel your own hygge that you will take with you as one of the best memories in your life.
