Dear Friends of St.Matthew's,
I invite you all to read this thoughtful article from Rev’d Chris. What follows is my own perspective and the pastoral insights that arose for me in response.

----------------------

Dear Rev’d Chris Brouillard-Coyle +,
Your article is more than a reflection — it is a mirror held up to our society, and for those of us in Windsor, it is a mirror we can no longer avoid. The way our city has chosen to deal with the unhoused and those living in poverty is not only ineffective; it is ethically troubling and spiritually alarming. When a city’s first instinct is to move people out of sight rather than address the causes of their suffering, we are no longer dealing with policy — we are dealing with a failure of moral imagination.
Your words expose a truth many would prefer to ignore: that power, when left unchecked, will always choose convenience over compassion. And Windsor is no exception. We have seen decisions made that prioritize aesthetics over humanity, “order” over dignity, and public image over the well‑being of our neighbours. These actions may be legal, but legality is not the measure of righteousness. The Gospel calls us to a higher standard.
What does it say about us when the most vulnerable are treated as obstacles to be managed rather than people to be loved? What does it say about our ethics when we invest more energy in hiding poverty than in healing it?
This is not the way of Christ. This is not the way of justice. This is not the way of a city that claims to care for its people.
And for us in the Church — clergy, lay leaders, and people of faith — your article is a wake‑up call. We cannot preach the Gospel on Sunday and remain silent when our neighbours are pushed aside on Monday. We cannot speak of dignity while watching it be stripped away. We cannot proclaim Good News while ignoring the bad news unfolding on our own streets.
The Gospel is not meant to be admired; it is meant to be lived. It is not meant to be recited; it is meant to be embodied. It is not meant to be safe; it is meant to be transformative.
Windsor’s current approach to the unhoused reveals a deeper spiritual crisis — not among those living in tents, but among those making decisions from comfortable rooms. When a city chooses visibility over vulnerability, efficiency over empathy, and control over compassion, it reveals how far we have drifted from the values we claim to uphold.
Your reflection reminds us that the people being moved are not the problem. The problem is our unwillingness to be moved ourselves — moved in conscience, moved in compassion, moved in courage.
Thank you for naming this truth with such clarity and grace. Your voice strengthens ours. Your courage calls forth our own. And your words remind us that the Gospel is not a theory but a way of life — a way that always leads us toward those who are forgotten, not away from them.
With gratitude for your ministry and your prophetic witness,

Gilles Haché +

By Rev. Chris Brouillard-Coyle Recently Windsor city council proposed posting signs discouraging donations to individual panhandlers on the streets with the caveat that those who want to help can make donations to appropriate organisations. In doing so, they join the plethora of municipalities...

As we gather this weekend, we do so with Mother’s Day in our hearts — a day that holds many different emotions and meanings for each of us.

This Sunday, we give thanks for all who share the gift of mothering love in our lives: women who raise children, women who nurture through friendship and compassion, and all who offer guidance, strength, and tenderness in quiet, everyday ways.

We also hold in prayer those for whom this day is tender — those who grieve the loss of a mother, those who longed, those who carry memories, and those who miss children they once held or hoped for. May God’s gentle presence surrounds each of you with comfort and peace.

As a community, we give thanks for the many expressions of love that shape us, sustain us, and remind us of God’s own nurturing heart.

May this weekend be a blessing to all who mother, all who remember, and all who need a place of grace.

Blessings to you and yours.

‐--------------------

As we gather this coming Sunday for the Fourth Sunday
of Easter, we continue to rejoice in the risen life of Christ and the promise of renewal that Easter brings.

This week, Rev. Mark Wilton who will lead us in worship and preach on the Gospel of John 10:1–10; the beautiful passage where Jesus reveals Himself as the Good
Shepherd, calling His sheep by name and leading them to abundant life.

Let us come together in faith and fellowship, ready to
listen for the Shepherd’s voice and to be renewed in spirit.

Join us this SUNDAY, APRIL 26, at 8:00 a.m. (said Eucharist) and 10:00 a.m. (sung Eucharist), for worship, prayer, and community as we celebrate the living presence of Christ among us.
