A Different Kind of Clientele

I just wanted to share a little story from late last year.

In November of 2021 our amazing friends at Mars Petcare offered us something a little different - RICE.

They know that most of our food is distributed via human food banks and wanted to know if our partners wanted any Ben’s Original Canada Uncle Ben’s original & whole grain rice as well as Seeds of Change Chia & Kale rice. We gladly accepted multiple skids of rice and started handing it out.

Our regular partners were happy to be offered some of the rice but we were also able to expand the circle and share with some additional partners (see list below*).

While everyone was grateful for the donation - I’d love to highlight a story from one of the recipients.

Kendalwood Food bank is located in Whitby and operates out of the Kendalwood Seventh-day Adventist Church. They support hundreds of families every month as well as the Durham Dignity for the Homeless outreach.

Kendalwood works closely with our partner pet food bank in south Durham, Rescue Chow. When Rescue Chow called them to ask if they needed any rice they told us an amazing story.

Like so many community organizations they had seen a major uptick in usage this winter and a dramatic reduction in donations.

Shortly before we connected with them, they faced a tough decision. With insufficient supplies of rice & pasta and money to buy only one of them - they choose to stock up on pasta and then just pray for miracle to provide them with rice and a week later they received our call to offer them multiple skids of rice.

The blessing of this “bonus” donation from MARS Petcare and the miracle of paying it forward through our human food bank partners has brought tears to our eyes and warmth to our heart during this dreary winter.

Thank you to our amazing donors like MARS Petcare; our fantastic partners at Rescue Chow who help us to receive, store and distribute donations; our volunteer drivers who help get everything where it is needed and our human food bank partners who help us distribute the food and supplies.
