Phoebe is one of the most influential yet overlooked leaders in the New Testament. In Romans 16:1-2, Paul commends her as a deacon of the church at Cenchreae and entrusts her with carrying his greatest theological masterpiece, the Book of Romans, to the believers in Rome.

In the first century, a letter carrier did far more than deliver a document. The courier represented the author. They publicly read the letter, explained its meaning, answered questions, and helped the audience understand the author's intent. This means Phoebe was likely the first person to publicly read and interpret Romans before the diverse network of Jewish and Gentile house churches scattered throughout Rome.

Imagine the scene. Gathered in homes across the empire's capital were people from different ethnicities, social classes, and backgrounds. As Phoebe read Paul's words about sin, grace, justification, union with Christ, and God's plan for Jews and Gentiles, she gave voice to the gospel that would shape Christianity for centuries.

This is not a story about power. It is a story about trust. Paul trusted Phoebe with the most important letter he ever wrote because she was a mature, gifted, faithful leader. Through her ministry, the multiethnic church in Rome heard the gospel proclaimed, and the message of King Jesus began transforming lives, families, and communities throughout the empire.

Have you ever been frustrated with God because a prayerfully considered plan hit a screeching halt? 🛑 Paul felt that. He had a grand vision for Spain, but he ended up in a Roman prison. Yet, in that "failure," God produced the Book of Romans—the very text that sparked the Reformation. If your plans are falling apart today, remember: God is a master at redeeming the pieces.
