As our Christmas season comes to a close we have the arrival of the Magi bringing their gifts to the new born King. We know that the birth of the Christ or the celebrations of the birth of the Christ throughout the years have not brought an end to the fears in the world, but what we can learn from the Magi is to find the light/the star/the promise to follow. Yes there are risks and uncertainty and mistakes along the way, but when we not just see the light, but seek the light, it can transform us and those around us. Giving hope in a world of fear. This is seems like a good place to end recorded service as my journey with Watford and Wyoming with that invitation not to let fear overpower you, but to find and share the light that shines in the darkness.

Christmas Greetings!

A short, recorded message (Suitable for the Christmas Season – Dec 24-Jan 3) with prayers and Scriptures at Christmastime. I have not included music, but invite you to listen and sing the songs of the season that are most meaningful for you. Find the joy, find the love… and know that God’s love revealed in the birth of the Christ, God’s love lived through our acts of kindness and compassion, God’s love is a joyful message in a world driven by fear.

On this fourth Sunday of Advent we turn to Joseph dilemma. In Luke’s Gospel we hear of Mary’s encounter with the Angel Gabriel and conversation with Elizabeth… but what about Joseph? In Matthew’s Gospel Joseph’s reaction to Mary’s pregnancy is to end the engagement. But, in a dream Mary’s story is confirmed and Joseph decides to “reach out” to Mary and carry through with the marriage and the raising of the child, to be named Jesus. Reaching out to others is love in action, love in the world. Let us open ourselves to reach out to others, as others continue to reach out to us!

Advent Greetings!
Last week was the combined choir service for Watford/Wyoming and we celebrated the gift of music and how music can comfort us, can bring us into community, and can tell stories. This week, for our recorded service, it is the story telling of Jeremiah and Mary and the courage they had to say “yes” to God! In the broader theme of fear and hope in this Advent season, part of overcoming fear is finding the courage to say “yes” – to say “yes” in our lives when we are called to do uncomfortable things… to say to God when fear holds us back. It’s not easy to say “yes”, we will stumble, fall and be hurt in the process… but when God calls, we say “yes” because we believe in God’s love for the world – revealed in a child born in a stable.

We enter the season of Advent, a time of preparation for the birth of the Christ child. But, we also come into this season with fears on our hearts and minds – whether individual fears that we have carried since childhood, fears that form as we age or fears that are proclaimed around us in the world. Fear is not new for the human species, and throughout this Advent/Christmas/Epiphany season we will explore some of our fears and try to hear the angels who time and again proclaim, “Fear not” as they come to Zechariah, to Mary, to Joseph, to the Shepherds, to the Magi… A “fear not” that doesn’t remove our fears but allows us to trust that God hears us and is with us through the journey.

Remembrance Sunday invites us not just to remember the sacrifices and costs of war, but as a people of faith to proclaim the promise of God’s Kingdom. But God’s Promises are not just for the future, but to be modeled now – compassion, understanding, grace and so much more… so that the costs of war are just memories that we hold on to as we seek to love one another. Let us worship.

This week the focus reading is that of Zaccheaus, the rich, chief tax collector, who was also short in stature. In his encounter with Jesus there is a declaration of salvation that has come… but not salvation because of what Zaccheaus does or says… but salvation because the lost have been found. Let us listen again as Jesus proclaims the wonders of being included and loved as part of God’s family.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Giving thanks is a choice. We learn at a young age the magic words of “please” and “thank you” because as toddlers we are often selfish and self-centered. Even as adults we can fall into this trap, and not see the wonders that surround us. That was Moses’ fear, that the people would forget their history, forget the faithfulness of their God and think that it was all about them. The Deuteronomy reading grounds the people, and future generations, to their past and to a God who walks with us. This Harvest Thanksgiving weekend, and indeed each and every day, we have a choice… to live with thankfulness on our hearts or not. I choose to give thanks!

The psalmist said, "Make a joyful noise" – and this week, it sounds a lot like "Let's go, Blue Jays!" Lifting our voices (and spirits) as the Jays head into the ALCS!
