Harvest Thanksgiving 2026
Dear Friends:
Harvest has traditionally been a time of celebration, of gathering, and of thanksgiving. Throughout history, people have harvested their crops, feasted and thanked their gods for the bounty of the land. They have celebrated with dancing, fairs and fetes.
We continue the tradition of fall fairs, harvest dances, and thanksgiving. Christians still thank their God for their prosperity, and the bounty of his creation. We remember that all that we have comes from Him. We also remember the command given by God in Leviticus 19: vv. 9-10 and Leviticus 23: v. 22, to leave some of the harvest for the poor and the alien. We remember Jesus' command to feed the poor, to clothe the naked, to shelter the homeless, heal the sick, and to visit the prisoner.
As a child growing up in a rural community there was a tradition when the peas were harvested for the neighbours to gather up the vines that were left behind. We would share the produce of our garden with friends that had no garden. The church would be decorated with miniature sheaves of wheat and oats as well as stalks of corn and fruits and vegetables. After the service these would be distributed to the less fortunate. In later years my parishes always shared with the local food bank or shelter.
The church, that is the Christian Community, continues to look after the needs of all people regardless, of race colour or creed. Harvest Thanksgiving is all about celebrating, dancing, thanksgiving and sharing. As we approach National Thanksgiving let us share the bounty that we enjoy by inviting others to share in our joy. Let us dance in celebration and thank our God and Saviour for the fullness of the earth.
Have a healthy and happy Harvest Thanksgiving.
In Christ's Service,
Gord
