In response to significant flooding in the Niagara region in Ontario, Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS) is coordinating day volunteers in the township of Lincoln for emergency clean up. According to CBC, the region experienced heavy rains on July 28, and another rainstorm followed on August 2.

The city of St. Catharines declared a state of emergency on August 3. MDS clean-up began that same week.

At this time, MDS is offering help to anyone in need in the area, even working in conjunction with insurance because people have been told insurance will be three to five weeks before work can begin.

“It’s worse than we thought!” says Chris Lepp, who is coordinating day volunteers in the area.

Lepp spoke with CM over the phone. He said MDS was receiving jobs through the municipality for the first week of disaster response and will now receive work assignments through Samaritan’s Purse to keep relief efforts coordinated. All work is currently emergency clean-up, such as removing damaged drywall, flooring, furniture, etc.

Leadership of MDS Ontario have yet to determine if there will be long-term work in the area.
