Today is the birthday of Pamela Colman Smith (Feb 16, 1878 - Sept 18, 1951), a British artist and occultist. She is best known for creating the artwork of the Waite-Smith Tarot deck (aka the Rider-Waite or Rider-Waite-Smith deck) for A.E. Waite over 6 months in 1909.

Waite provided her with detailed descriptions of the Major Arcana cards to work off of, but only gave her a simple list of meanings of the Minor Arcana. This allowed Smith to develop her own illustrations for the Minor Arcana, including the rich symbolism contained in it.

The Waite-Smith deck has become the standard deck amongst Tarot readers and her influence continues amongst occultists today.
