St Matthias Anglican Church

St Matthias Anglican Church An active, inclusive & inquisitive congregation;rooted in the love & teachings of Jesus Christ; joyfully musical; committed to eco & social justice issues

As early as 1911 an Anglican home group was organized at 1587 Fairfield Road by Christ
Church Cathedral. The group outgrew meeting in the house, funds were raised and on January 1, 1915 the church known as St. Matthias Mission was opened and consecrated at 311 Richmond Avenue in Fairfield. By the mid 1950s, the congregation had outgrown this facility. It was sold and St. Matthias moved to its curr

ent location at 600 Richmond Avenue, where the new larger church and parish hall was dedicated on January 6,1957. St Matthias is now an amazingly active small congregation. Christ Church Cathedral Pre-School recently opened in the Rectory. Rogers Court next door is a 24 unit low income seniors residence. Numerous organizations use the parish hall including: ballet, music and art classes; Al-Anon; Power Squadron, and Threshold Housing Society office. In addition, the parish itself supports Camosun College Access Program scholarships; John Jordan's Rwanda project; monthly recycling days; Threshold Housing’s Life Skills program, and other community activities. We have a strong connection with the Canadian College of Performing Arts and an active choir and music program.

Come and enjoy our lovely labyrinth (corner of Richmond & Richardson) -- newly "groomed" by generous and kind neighbours! We are so delighted that this neighbourhood treasure (originally supported by a Victoria placemaking grant and lots of volunteer hours) has been refreshed. In this contemplative season of Advent -- or at any time -- enjoy a few peaceful minutes. And ... warmest thanks to our lovely neighbours!

Join us for any or all of our Christmas worship and companionship opportunities. On Sunday, December 22nd, our 10 am worship will be the service of "Lessons and Carols." This is a simple, but beautiful time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas. It's a series of Scriptural readings and traditional carols. We'd love to see you! And, yes, we'll light the candle for the 4th Sunday of Advent.

Join us for any or all of these Christmas worship events. A Blue Christmas Service Friday, December 20th at 3 pm in the Chapel. We offer this especially for those hurting during the holidays. Some come because they are mourning the death of a loved one. Some are far from home. Some suffer from illness, addiction, or estrangement. Some are lonely, struggling financially, or estranged. Some hurt because of the great pain, need, and violence in our nation and world. The reasons for coming are many. We gather to remember God is good. God is strong. God is near. We are not alone, and we have every reason to hold on to hope.

Sunday, June 30, parishioner John Jordan will speak at worship about the work being done in our partner parish in Rwanda. His power point presentation will have video of their enthusiastic worship service and photos of our nursery schools and support for poor mothers.
After the service, at coffee time, John will show a 10min video of the wider scale of the work of Rwanda Rising including several personal testimonies from grateful beneficiaries. See up close the power of God's work at our hands.
