James Bay United Church

James Bay United Church We are a Christian community from many walks of life growing in trust that God is up to something beautiful here and now, in and through our lives.

James Bay United Church is a community striking for its diversity. We are made up of people following in the way of Jesus on the journey inward and the journey outward. We are discovering once again that our vitality grows when our love reaches wide and our commitment is to serve the well-being of the neighbourhood. It’s happening, for example
- through the ministry of our thrift shop,
- in our ga

thering for Sunday worship,
- at our Tuesday morning neighbourhood breakfast,
- in our partnering with others to sponsor refugees. As our connections widen and our friendships deepen, we are experiencing a sense of the abundant community that God dreams for all people. If this calls to you we welcome your companionship.

A message from United Church Moderator, Rev. Dr. Kimberly Heath for Pride, calling the church to move deeper into inclusion, justice, and radical belonging.

In 2025, The United Church of Canada offered an apology to 2S and LGBTQIA+ people and communities — naming the real harm caused through words, actions, silence, and systems that failed to protect and affirm God’s beloved people.

This message reflects on that apology — not as an ending, but as a beginning. A threshold into deeper healing, accountability, and transformation.

Pride is more than celebration. It is remembrance. It is resistance. It is a witness to the sacred truth that every identity rooted in love and authenticity is a divine gift.

Radical belonging is not optional — it is at the heart of the Gospel. May we continue the work of becoming a church that learns, acts with courage, and lives out love in word and deed.

Join us for a very special class to support health, well-being, and longevity at JBUC!

In this special presentation, we will learn traditional health and wellness practices rooted in ancient Chinese traditions, refined over centuries and passed down from teacher to student.

The Twelve Animals of Liu He Ba Fa will be presented by Eric Tuttle, one of North America's highest-level internal martial artists.

This course will cover Standing Post and Moving Post practice to improve balance, enhance the flow of energy, and invigorate the spine.

When & where: June 4, 6:00–7:00 pm, JBUC Lower Hall (back door entrance)

Following the introductory session, we anticipate offering Eric's classes on a weekly basis, usually on Thursdays from 6:00–7:00 pm, with occasional schedule adjustments.

Cost: $10/class

This Sunday is Pentecost! As the story goes, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, resurrected on Easter Sunday, ascended 40 days after Easter, then the Holy Spirit descends with a whooosh! on Pentecost (the 50th day). Wind and fire are commonly associated with this event, as is mutual understanding and infusion of the Spirit.

We will be hosting the SingYourJoy Emerge Youth Choir (under the direction of Gordon Miller and Christine Chepyha) so it will certainly be a Spirit-filled Sunday!

Our Sunday Service begins at 10:30. You are warmly invited to gather with us from 10:15 am, in our Sanctuary or online, for a time of musical reflection.

Discover Your Core Motivation Under Your Outer Behaviour

The Enneagram: a powerful and insightful tool for understanding ourselves and others. At its core, the Enneagram helps us to see ourselves at a deeper, more objective level and can be of invaluable assistance on our path to self-knowledge. (Enneagram Institute, NY)

Are you a Peacemaker, a Loyalist, an Achiever, a Reformer, a Helper? Or, are you a Challenger, an Investigator, an Individualist or an Enthusiast? Come discover your natural gifts.

Saturday, May 30th 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Light lunch provided

Cost: $35.00

Pre-register with Marg Lunam: [email protected]

The Enneagram's spiritual foundation is rooted in a blend of ancient mystical traditions & modern psychology, designed as a map for personal transformation and inner growth. Its spiritual roots are believed to trace back to early Christian desert fathers who described patterns of vices (the seven deadly sins). The system is used to understand the "false self" or ego structure, enabling individuals to move toward their "true self" & a more profound spiritual reality.

Get ready! To celebrate the songs that feed our souls, kindle our courage, unite us across our differences, express our convictions, our daring hopes and prayers.

We invite you to submit a favourite hymn — a hymn that fills you up with strength, inspiration, comfort, hope, or joy. On June 7, we will celebrate by singing these hymns AND hearing a few words about why these pieces uplift you.

In preparation we’re asking you to:

1) Identify one or two hymns – from the Voices United or More Voices collections — that you absolutely love.

2) Fill in the online form https://form.jotform.com/261345102548048, email Jennifer at [email protected], or complete the form included in the bulletin during the May 24 Sunday Service and drop it no later than Tuesday, May 26 into the Singing Our Faith drop box in the sanctuary.

3) Come prepared on June 7 to tell us in 4 or 5 sentences what it is about this hymn that inspires you.

Please note that if we receive more hymns than can be sung in a one hour service, we’ll have to select from among them. Hold on to the ones not chosen and do this again in the future.
