It’s Canada Jewish Heritage Month. Be proud!

Today marks the beginning of Jewish Heritage Month (JHM) in Canada, a time for Jewish communities across the country to celebrate our history, culture, and contributions with pride 🍁✨
Just days ago, we released our 2025 Annual Audit, which documented 6,800 antisemitic incidents in Canada last year: the highest number ever recorded.

And yet, even in the face of these difficult findings, JHM reminds us that our story is far richer than the hate we’ve had to confront. For more than 250 years, Jewish Canadians have helped shape this country, and that legacy speaks louder than any statistic ever could.

This month is an opportunity to be louder, prouder, and more visible than ever. Let’s celebrate the vibrancy, resilience, and joy of Jewish life in Canada 💙

How to celebrate JHM:
Show up: attend events, visit exhibits, or join a lecture
Connect: go to synagogue, host a Shabbat, or gather with family and friends
Give back: support a local program or community initiative

Join us for a fascinating talk on Memory & Mezuzot on June 21 at 11 AM at the JCC where we will explore how Mezuzot are not only a sacred tool of connection with God but also, a special pathway to the past and our Jewish ancestors. You will learn about the amuletic aspects of Mezuzot, the history of this prolific object and the importance of Jewish material culture.
Pascalle Sabine Ricard (she/her) is a fourth year MA candidate in the Art History & Visual Studies program at the University of Victoria. Her research on material culture considers human rituals, symbolism within homes, and sacred spaces. ML Merlot

Tikkun Leil Shavuot: A Night of Study with URJ Small Congregations

May 21–22: 5pm-7am PT

Join with rabbis and cantors from small congregations for a full night of learning, connection, and inspiration on zoom. You’ll be able to choose from 26 unique sessions exploring themes of Shavuot, biblical texts, Israel, and liturgy. Once you register, you’ll receive a link to the event site, where the full schedule of breakout sessions will be shared as we get closer. Chag sameach! May your Lag Baomer be joyful and meaningful.

Lag BaOmer is a shorthand way of saying the 33rd day of the Omer. The Omer marks the seven-week period from Passover, which commemorates the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt, to Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Oftentimes, the holiday is marked by parties, picnics and evening bonfires.
