An interview with our favourite forest scientist, Dr. Suzanne Simard. Enjoy!
"We’ve all evolved from the same root. If the trees can recover, so can we."

Take a look at the rare Garry Oak ecosystems of south eastern Vancouver Island- they're at risk from development, invasive species, and climate change. A small zone but an important one.

Show your pride and learn some Indigenous history this month!

June is both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month.

We honour the Two-Spirit people, LGBTQIA+ Indigenous relatives, Survivors, Elders, knowledge keepers, and community members who continue to carry culture, language, teachings, and ceremony forward.

For generations, Indigenous people have protected who they are in the face of policies and systems designed to erase identity, culture, and belonging. Today, we recognize the strength, resilience, and leadership of those who continue to create space for future generations to live fully as themselves.

At IRSSS, we believe healing happens when people are able to reconnect with culture, community, and identity.

This month we celebrate Indigenous histories, cultures, and the diversity of Indigenous peoples across these lands.

"There are times in life when change happens suddenly. And there are other times when change is slow. But that doesn’t mean change isn’t happening.

Small changes, made consistently, are not small at all. Reading 20 pages per day is 30 books per year. Saving $10 per day is $3,650 per year. Running 1 mile per day is 365 miles per year. Decluttering one room per week finishes your entire home in 3 months. Don’t underestimate the power of small habits.

If that is the word and the encouragement you need to hear today, I am here to offer it.

Not all of your steps in the right direction need to be a big one. The small ones matter too.

Or, as the old saying goes, “A jug fills drop by drop.”

If you want to declutter your home, every item and box removed is a step in the right direction. Keep going.

If you are trying to get out of debt, every extra dollar directed to repayment is a step in the right direction. Keep going.

If you are trying to be healthier, every time you go for a walk is a step (literally) in the right direction. Keep going.

If you are trying to be a better spouse or parent, every moment of intention or thoughtful act is a step in the right direction. Keep going.

If you are trying to slow down, every canceled commitment is a step in the right direction. Keep going.

If you are trying to heal a relationship, every honest conversation, every time you are motivated by love, every prayer you offer is a step in the right direction. Keep going.

I don’t know what positive change you are wanting in your life. But keep going. Don’t stop. Your life is worth it. The small changes do matter. And there is one you can control today."
