The Mustard Seed Street Church Nurturing Faith, Hope & Love

Food Bank | Food Rescue | Family Support | Hospitality | Hope Farm The Mustard Seed was an answer to this question.

Over 35 years ago, a community of people began asking questions about how to best reach our city’s local poor. Wanting to meet the deepest needs of mankind, our founding members desired to respond to Jesus’ commands to feed the hungry and clothe the poor. Established in 1975, The Mustard Seed began as a small Street Church and outreach ministry in Victoria’s urban core. Thirty-five years ago, The

Mustard Seed was operating out of a prayer closet tucked away on Government Street. The need of our under-privileged brothers and sisters was so great that we soon moved to a larger building on Pandora. But our facilities and ministries have expanded considerably since 1975. Moving to Queens Avenue in 1995, our ministry has significantly evolved since those initial years. The Mustard Seed has expanded to become a multi-purpose agency that meets the needs of the whole person living in poverty. Today the Mustard Seed is comprised of a vibrant Street Church, an active Food Bank, and a number of other dynamic ministries. We provide advocacy services, counseling, nursing services, a clothing bank, a drop-in center, a prison ministry, and more. We recently planted another seed of hope in the Cowichan Valley. Located 50 minutes north of Victoria, our Hope Farm Healing Center is a recovery center for former addicts. Expanding 32-acres, Hope Farm connects recovering addicts with the land while offering healing counseling services. We provide training and work experience to benefit our participants and the surrounding Cowichan community. Future Dreams
We recognize that poverty is a draining cycle. We don’t want to just offer hand-outs to our community. We want to offer a hand up. In everything we do, our staff and volunteers strive to break down social boundaries and meet the physical, spiritual, social, and relational needs of the whole person. Our dream is to work together as a community to lead our clients out of poverty. We desire to empower and educate our clients in order to offer these valued community members a way out of the cycle. We long to offer more expansive classes on everything from nutrition, budgeting, cooking, and employable skill training. We dream of larger facilities where we might host classes, child-care, temporary housing, and more. We invite you to dream big with us as we plan carefully to meet these goals. Together we can break the cycle of poverty in Greater Victoria.

Meet Colin!
A year ago, Colin came to The Mustard Seed with a simple but meaningful goal: to give back. “I wanted to get more involved in giving back,” he says, “and to get a better sense of what people are like who need these kinds of social services.”

From then on, every Thursday morning, Colin serves at the Guest Services Intake Desk, welcoming people as they arrive. “I enjoy meeting people,” he shares. “And I enjoy knowing that I’m helping.” He values the small moments when he can connect with people.

“I like hearing people’s stories,” he says. One conversation that stayed with him was with a guest recovering from cancer. “He was telling me about his experience, and I just find that interesting… I like to interact with people.”

He brings a quiet intention to every shift. “Wherever I go, I try to exude love,” Colin explains. “Maybe people don’t feel it, but maybe, on some level, it improves their lives a little bit. And that would improve my life too.”

Volunteering here has changed how Colin sees the street community. “We all see people on the street, and many of us make instant judgments,” he reflects. “I wanted to get closer, to understand.” Through one-on-one conversations, that understanding has grown. “I’ve gained more compassion for people by getting to know them.”

He hopes The Seed can continue serving without concern for underlying finances. “It’s a great service to the community. Something we absolutely need here in Victoria,” he says. “There are many people here who truly care about others’ lives.”

Thank you, Colin, for your compassion, your openness, and your quiet determination to see people as they truly are.

Meet Brooklyn!
Brooklyn first walked through our doors as a Food Bank guest, navigating a difficult moment in her life. “I’d been really, really broke,” she shares. “I came for the food bank just to help out a little bit.”

What she found here changed everything. “I was so impressed and so pleased with what I saw. It’s just vibrating with energy. I love it.”

It was a simple act of kindness that stayed with her. “JoAnne met me when I was confused and overwhelmed,” Brooklyn recalls. “She didn’t just tell me where to go—she met my soul. She helped me find connection.” That moment sparked something deeper. “I thought, I have to be here as a volunteer.”

Now, Brooklyn volunteers at the Hospitality coffee window on Friday mornings. “This is the best five hours of my week. I love interacting with people,” she says. “There’s magic in every interaction. It’s just two humans helping each other.”

Her work is grounded in empathy. Having experienced homelessness as a teenager, she understands the challenges many guests face. “I can relate to what people are going through,” she shares. “My heart really goes out to them.”

One of her proudest moments came during a challenging interaction. A guest arrived frustrated and overwhelmed, and Brooklyn chose to listen. “I gave her what she needed. She took four meals home for her family and left happy,” she says. “I felt like I did something really good in the world. It’s just lunch, but two people came together, connected, and improved one day. One day at a time.”

For Brooklyn, what makes The Mustard Seed special is simple: “It’s a soulful place—it’s connection, compassion, and care. I’m very proud to be here.”

Looking ahead, she hopes to see The Mustard Seed continue to grow. “Expansion,” she says. “The more people we can reach, the better.”

Thank you, Brooklyn, for your heart, your courage, and for bringing connection and compassion to every interaction.

These radishes arrived at our Food Security Distribution Centre needing extra care. However, with the help of our volunteers, they were soon cleaned and prepared for use.

Radishes are a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Thank you to Ming and Wei Er for helping rescue them and turn them into something meaningful for our community.

We were glad to host Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria youth for a tour and volunteer day at our Food Security Distribution Centre, sharing how food rescue works and how it supports our community.

Thank you to the City of Victoria - Local Government SPARK Program for helping create opportunities that enhance youth safety and wellbeing.

Meet Pat!
Pat has always known she wanted to volunteer around food. “I’ve wanted to volunteer in the realm of food for a long time,” she shares. After helping in her own community, a fellow volunteer pointed her toward The Mustard Seed. “She kept saying, ‘We need volunteers for fruit rescue on Thursdays.’” When the opportunity came up, Pat was clear about one thing: “I want to be here in the warehouse with food.”

Now, nearly three years later, Pat spends each Thursday morning with our Fruit Rescue team, helping turn rescued produce into food people can actually use. “We take fruit that’s usable and either freeze berries, make fruit crisp or fruit salad and fruit leather,” she explains. “We cut out the bad stuff and use the rest.” She approaches the work with both practicality and principle. “I’m pretty ruthless about separating the usable from the non-usable Why would I let something go that’s got a bit of mold on it?"

Pat loves working with her team. “There are some old hands here. Everyone just knows what needs doing and falls into it,” she says. She finds meaning in knowing that nothing goes to waste. “Everything we make gets used. The fruit salad and crisps go downtown, and what we freeze goes to other groups. It’s all used.”

That impact is what stays with her. “I feel good every day when I walk away,” Pat says. “I know I’ve spent my time usefully, and I know it’s useful for my community.”

She hopes The Seed continues to thrive and serve the community, and that more people understand the bigger picture. “There’s a lot of food that isn’t being used properly, and there are people who are hungry,” she says. “Food is basic—like water. Don’t throw out food. Use it well.”

Thank you, Pat, for your care, your honesty, and for making sure good food doesn’t go to waste.

Hunger doesn’t take a break — and neither does hope. Monthly donors provide the reliable, consistent support that keeps our Food Bank shelves stocked, fuels our Food Security programs, and ensures families, seniors, and individuals can count on us year-round.

Your monthly donation helps us plan ahead, respond to increasing demand, and provide healthy food every week. It’s one of the most impactful ways to support our community.

Meet Jay!
Last summer, Jay came to The Mustard Seed during a difficult time while caring for her beloved dog, who was very ill. “The treatment was very expensive. I started coming just for lunch to help out a little bit,” she recalls. What she found here went beyond a meal. “I really liked the atmosphere. I wanted to be part of the team and help others the way that I was helped.”

Today, Jay volunteers in the Food Bank Market, mostly working behind the scenes. “I do stocking and organizing,” she explains. “I love it.” While she’s also helped in the kitchen and in guest service, the Market is where she feels most at home. “I just want to do a good job and make sure everything’s organized so people can find what they need. That way we can help people as efficiently as we can.”

“There have been so many great people here,” she says. “I feel accepted. I feel part of the team. I feel like I’m doing good.” Through conversations with guests and volunteers, she’s come to appreciate the community here. “People are really thankful. Sometimes they tell their own stories, and it’s a good connection. You just know you’re helping people who really need it.”

Jay also brings deep empathy to her work. “I’ve been homeless before,” she shares openly. “I can often associate something I’ve been through with something they’re going through. My heart really goes out to people because I understand what it’s like.”

Her message to the community is simple and direct. “You shouldn’t be hard on yourself. We’re here to help. There should be no stigma, no negative feelings. That’s what we’re here for. If you need food, please come. We want to help you.” And she added, “There’s just so much support here. If you’re having a bad day, people are there to cheer you up.”

Looking ahead, Jay hopes The Mustard Seed can receive more funding and help even more people. “The cost of living keeps going up,” she says. “People need more help. The more we can help them, the better.”

Thank you, Jay, for your courage, your compassion, and for giving back to the community that once supported you.
