In recognizing Jesus' importance, John the Baptist gives an analogy of the situation as a wedding. John is like the best man who helps the groom (Jesus) as much as he can but the true joy is seeing the groom wed the bride (the Church). Overall, weddings are a metaphor for salvation where Israelite women would not inherit their father's property but would be given the gift of their husband's property in marriage.

The Baptist states he must decrease that Jesus may increase. Similarly, in our faith, we need to look to ourselves less in order for God to increase in our lives. He is the one who will bring about change, so we must resign ourselves into trust in Him (faith) that He might do what He has promised.

the Lord declares He tears us apart that He might heal us. People outside the Church might presume, because they seem spiritually fine to themselves, that this is God trying to falsely accuse us of sin so that He may play the Saviour and heal us. However, that hardness of heart to admitting our own sin is the pride God seeks to remove from us. Like no surgeon can heal without making a cut or puncture somewhere, God does tear us apart that He might tear out our guilt and start our healing process. Christ binds us together again and nurses us back to health, ensuring the dire sickness of soul no longer lies within us.

Is death the solution to the problems of life? Life under the cross is the solution. Killing and murder solves nothing, but in the death of the Son of God there is true life, and with it, hope and salvation. Let this great gift continually transform us so that God may bring His light in us and through into this world.

The latter half of the Lord's Prayer asks for worldly needs, forgiveness, and our lives being holy. The Lord gives us everything we need to live in the world and in the Spirit, and we should be living out this love. If we receive what God provides, especially forgiveness, but do not live it out, then we are implicitly rejecting the blessings of God. May the truth of God's grace always dwell among us. Amen.

Early in his ministry, Jesus' disciples start baptizing people (most likely imitating John the Baptist's practice because this is before Pentecost when the Holy Spirit began to be given in baptism) which causes confusion with John the Baptist's disciples. John rests on the testimony that Jesus is the one baptized in the Spirit and the testimony John gave about himself that he is not the Messiah.

We are going back in the gospel of John to cover a passage we skipp...

The rest of God and creation was meant to be a peace that lasted eternally. This wasn't about not working but not living in toil and labour that is otherwise taxing on a person. Much of our "rest" isn't always going to be lounging around but engaging with something or other. This means that the true lack of rest we have is sin, that is, a corruption of what we would be doing to delight our souls. Picturing the promised rest of God as doing nothing is like picturing death where the body simply lies in the grave. When Christ raises us from the dead he does raise us to rest, albeit the rest of the paradise to come still being full of acts of love. We get a sampling of this rest in worship where the Lord gives us peace of heart and mind in His forgiveness and separation from the world's sinful corruption.

Sermon Text: Genesis 2:2-3The rest of God and creation was meant to be a peace that lasted eternally. This wasn't about not working but not living in toil an...

Having heard that his following Jesus will end in his death, Peter asks Jesus about the Apostle John. Jesus essentially says to Peter that this has nothing to do with Peter and Peter should concentrate on his own discipleship. We should not be comparing ourselves with other believers but simply live in Christ. For John, he will abide in Christ in his own way, living in Christ's eternal life. There was a rumor that John would live until the Second Coming of Jesus, but John dismisses this.

Moses declares he hopes all God's people receive His Spirit that they may be prophets. Through God's Word and baptism, we have received the Holy Spirit so we should be speaking God's Word of love and salvation to people. Do you feel qualified to be God's representative to the world? You are. Christ has poured his love out onto you in Word and baptism and you have this love dwelling in you. Do you feel like you are living up to being God's representative to the world? Perhaps not but the Holy Spirit is still dwelling in you to give you a never-ending supply of Christ's love. Living in His love means that the Lord is raising you up and equipping you for His work. Your role is speaking the Word of the Lord in love, and the Lord will guard and guide you in doing this.

Sermon Text: Numbers 11:29Moses declares he hopes all God's people receive His Spirit that they may be prophets. Through God's Word and baptism, we have rece...

Jesus continues speaking as he reinstates Peter by describing his death. It signifies Peter's crucifixion under Emperor Nero in Rome which occurs once Peter is much older (most likely in his late 60s). Peter will glorify God in his death (1) by dying in faith with Christ instead of his past denial of Christ, (2) in entering eternal life, and (3) being a martyr, encouraging others to hold fast to the truth of eternal life in Christ.
