In recent years a model of open-air preaching has developed that is controversial in nature, harsh in tone and disruptive. It will no doubt attract a large social media viewing and voluminous discussion, but I am not sure how beneficial it is to the cause of Christ. In the May 1909 issue of the Irish Baptist Magazine, Dr Hugh D....

There were two trees mentioned in the garden of Eden. The first tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, was forbidden. Disobedience would bring death, and Adam and Eve disobeyed. While death did not come instantly or perhaps in the way anticipated, their relationship with God was broken and Adam and Eve fell into a state of sin and misery....

Genesis three is often referred to as the story of the fall. When you read the chapter, however, the fall happened within a short time—verses 1-6. It is more correct to say that Genesis three is the story of salvation from the fall. In order to save Adam and his wife from the fall into sin and misery, a number of things needed to happen....

Nowhere in the entire Bible (as far as I can find) do we find in one paragraph the story of saving grace displayed in such fullness in the life of one individual. The Story of Adam and his wife Eve, in Genesis three, brings us from the despairing depths of sin (verses 7-10) through the process of God’s grace—the pursuit of the sinner (verses 9-13), the covering of sin (verse 21), and the effectual work of grace in the life (verse 20)—until we find at the end in God’s sovereignty, life and immortality secured (verse 22)....

“Early one morning in the year 1738 a shepherd boy with home-spun clothes and bare feet, stood at the counter of Alexander McCulloch's bookshop in the University city of St. Andrews. The startled shopkeeper was yet more surprised when he heard the youth's request, it was for a Greek New Testament. “Boy,” exclaimed the Professor of Greek who happened to be in the shop at that moment, “if you can read that book, you shall have it for nothing.” Soon a rather thick leather volume was in the lad's hands and to the astonishment of all present, he read a passage and won his prize....

The story of Moses at the burning bush is a fascinating insight into the call to ministry and the inward struggle of the Lord's servants. Rejected and discredited by the people in the initial attempt to deliver Israel, Moses was left in a state of chronic insecurity. But the Lord had not finished with him and his greatest work was yet to come....

When God created Adam and his wife, he put them in a beautiful garden called Eden. It was “God’s Garden,” (Ezekiel 28:13), without sin, and as the name suggests a place “enriched” or “made abundant,” where Adam could live in perfect communion with God. Adam had everything he needed in the garden; every tree was beautiful to look at and good for food....

“The sun was beaming down in all his tropical power and splendour on that glorious morning in 1893 when we landed at the Arab town of Mombasa, on the eastern shore of the continent of Africa,” wrote Rachel Watt as she, her husband Stuart, and 4 children arrived in Kenya for the second time.[1] Their first missionary trek into the interior of Tanzania (1885-88) had ended due to the breakdown of health, and they retreated to Australia....

In 1544 John Calvin wrote a letter to Emperor Charles V to be presented at the Imperial Diet at Spires. In that letter, he defended the work of Luther and the Reformation and identified a number of corruptions that necessitated reform “without delay.” This was a call for reform in both “doctrine and the Church.” For Calvin, it was not only the doctrines taught in Scripture that he cared about but also the government of the church....

It has often been claimed that the Protestant Reformation did not stimulate missions and that the Reformers had no missionary vision. One Italian Jesuit, Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621), claimed that the Protestant Church lacked evangelistic zeal which, he said, is a key characteristic of the true Church. Bellarmine may be forgiven for this claim, judging it by Martin Luther's teaching on the subject, for Luther believed that the Great Commission was fulfilled at the time of the Apostles....
