John 20:28

There is no indication that Thomas ever put his hand into Jesus' side. He had seen the risen Lord, and that was enough. He fell down and worshipped. When we really see Jesus, we don't squabble over words or doubts. Doubts vanish when we see His face, and all we can do is worship.

John 20:26-27

Jesus came to the disciples when Thomas was there. He knew what Thomas had said without being told. Instead of condemning Thomas, Jesus offered him the evidence he needed. The holes were still in His hands, feet and side. As we said yesterday, Jesus gave evidence to a sincere person. Testimonies down through the ages provide abundant evidence that God will prove Himself to those who seek the Truth.

John 20:24-25

Thomas is known as Doubting Thomas. Actually, all the disciples doubted until Jesus showed Himself to them. Thomas was an honest man. He wouldn't pretend if he wasn't convinced of the resurrection. God will respond to honest doubt and sincere questions. He will ignore people who just use questions to try and justify what they have already determined to believe. We should have the same approach. We should answer people with serious questions and doubts to the best of our ability. On the other hand, we don't need to waste time in endless debates with those who have already chosen not to believe.

John 20:23
This verse is hard to understand. We must remember that it comes right after the giving of the Holy Spirit. They will follow these instructions under the direction of the Holy Spirit. It was not permission to be independent and power-driven. We see an example of this when Ananias and Sapphira were struck dead by God at the word of Peter for lying to the Holy Spirit. The reason much of the church, including me (to be honest), doesn't experience more of God's demonstrated power is that we don't have the same close relationship with the Holy Spirit that the apostles had. This isn't the Holy Spirit's fault - He doesn't change. It is our responsibility.

As the old woman shuffled through the streets of Jerusalem, the dust seemed to cling to her. There was no getting rid of it. Her eyes drifted from the dirty street to the fruit stalls she was moving past. Her stomach rumbled as she remembered it had been several days since she had had more than a few crumbs to eat. What a treat it would be to have a few fresh figs or dates, maybe just a bite of a juicy peach. She watched as a vendor picked out a bruised peach with a look of disgust. It was no good to him, but it would still taste good. Maybe…maybe he would give it to her. He glanced her way and then tossed it in the garbage.

The old woman’s eyes returned to the street, and she slowly and painfully continued toward her destination. A spark of humour glimmered in her eyes as she thought, Getting old isn’t for the faint-hearted. She felt the aches of a life of hard work. It had been a good life, though. She and her husband had enjoyed every minute of it as they worked side by side to farm their small property. Their only sadness had been that they were unable to have children. A tear trickled down her cheek. Then he had died four years ago. Alone. She had been left alone in a world without a husband to protect her or children to provide for her. It had been terrifying, but she had survived. Praise the God of Israel!

There was one gift that Jesus commented on and value which shocked His disciples. God doesn't look at things the way we do and we need to learn His prespective
