Namo Amida Butsu – To Space and Beyond

Growing up as a child, I was always interested in physics. Albert Einstein was a hero of
mine. Along side my poster of the rock group KISS, which was hung on the ceiling over my
bed, was the icon poster of Einstein with his unkept hair looking fully the part of the absent-minded professor. In high school, my favorite teacher was my grade 11 physics
teacher, Mr. Pontifex who always had such philosophical questions such as when I jump
up, is it me moving up or is the Earth moving down? Perhaps, in a different life, I might have been a physicist instead of a minister, but my path led me down a career as a Jodo Shinshu minister, which I have been serving as for almost 35 years now.

So, what does all of this have to do with a Buddhist lecture? Because of my interest in physics, I have previously given talks on subjects such as “Quantum Physics and Amida Buddha”. For this upcoming talk at the Kelowna Buddhist Temple, I would like to examine “Space and Buddhism”, more specifically “Astro Physics and Buddhism or was Captain Kirk a Buddhist?”

If this sounds crazy but peaks your interest as to what the heck is sensei going to talk about, then I hope you will join me for the afternoon on July 11th for this Dharma Session entitled “Namo Amida Butsu – To Space and Beyond”.

In Jodo Shinshu we celebrate Obon as a joyful time focusing on deep gratitude, self-reflection and honouring the lives that shaped our own. Hanamatsuri, or the "Flower Festival," is a Japanese Buddhist holiday celebrated to commemorate the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha. The festival features a small, flower-decorated altar holding a statue of the baby Buddha, over which worshippers pour ama-cha (sweet tea) to symbolize the rain that fell at his birth.

The Vernon Buddhist Temple is hosting a Buddhist Talk Sunday April 19th 2026 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
Lama Rabten Tshering will give Buddhist Teachings in English. He is the Resident Teacher and Spiritual Director of Nalanda Bodhi Canada. He follows the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism.
Join us at the Vernon Japanese Cultural Centre at 4895 Bella Vista Road.
