Control.
As humans, we desire it, thinking it will bring us happiness and fulfillment. But it’s a never ending hole that only ever brings death: resentment, bitterness, anger, hatred, chaos, stress, illness….
We know this, yet we still want it.
Why?
Because it feeds our selfishness.
Our human nature craves it and the world says you deserve it and need it.
There is a better way, yet it does come at a cost. It means my selfishness must die because it might not get its way.
What’s the better way?
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Yes, yes, such a familiar passage, right?! 😉
On the day God was revealing my selfishness to me, He highlighted 3 of the words Jesus said:
“learn from me.”
He knows I’m gonna mess up! He knows I want to choose control. He knows I want others to just listen to me. He knows. And that’s why He says “learn from me.” As we walk this path together and a situation comes up, He will speak to my heart His ways. Do I jump for joy at the opportunity to let my selfishness go?
Mm, no.
But I do know what choosing control has got me in the past so instead, I say to Him “would you soften my heart towards this person…because I really want to choose my own way.”
I never need to fake it with Him. Why would I?
He already told me He is gentle and that He wants me to learn from Him. So I come to Him as the real me-issues and all.
So remember, He’s not judging you for your failures and your desire to choose selfishness. He’s offering you a life out of that pit of stress and chaos.
Talk to Him.
