Seafarers’ Sunday (25 Jan.26) at St. Mary’s South Hill Vancouver.
Service Time: 10:30am- Holy Eucharist
Prayer: Gracious God, we pray for all seafarers in their daily work; for their safety as they face the dangers of their calling and for their families during long periods of separation, loneliness and anxiety. Bless them and those who serve their needs, that they may put their whole trust in you, and that they may be filled with your peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 🙏

Advent Wreath
Blue Advent Candles
In Anglican tradition, blue Advent candles symbolize hope and are used as an alternative to the more traditional purple liturgical color, which represents repentance and royalty. This shift to blue is part of a move to emphasize hope and anticipation for the coming of Christ, rather than penance. The use of blue during Advent also connects to the Virgin Mary and has roots in medieval English tradition, revived in recent centuries.
blue Advent candles symbolize hope, representing the color of the night sky before the dawn of Jesus' birth and the expectation of the King. This usage was influenced by the medieval Sarum Rite, which used blue for Advent, a practice revived by some Anglican and Episcopal churches to distinguish Advent from Lent and create a sense of hopeful expectation
Blue symbolizes royalty, the coming of the King, hope, the night sky before the dawn, the sea before creation, and Mary.
Symbolism of blue candles
• Hope and anticipation: Blue is a color of hope, representing the peaceful and hopeful waiting for the birth of Jesus.
• Virgin Mary: Blue is often associated with the Virgin Mary, symbolizing her faith and trust as she awaited the arrival of Christ.
• Distinction from Lent: Using blue helps to distinguish the Advent season from Lent, shifting the emphasis from penance to joyful expectation.
• Historical connection: This use of blue has roots in a medieval English tradition which was later revived by some Anglican, Episcopal, and other Protestant churches. (source:Wikipedia)
