Hi Volunteers!

Thank you so much for your support over the last 20 years!

It is with a heavy heart that we announce our next meal will be our last meal for a while as we pause to ensure our organization's sustainability. Unfortunately, since we restarted after COVID, we've faced higher food prices, added event space costs, lower volunteer engagement, and decreased donations. As such, it's time to take a break.

When will Peace Meal restart?

We are dedicated to serving the community in our unique way and hope to restart soon. Our restart will be contingent on achieving financial and volunteer-resource sustainability. This means having at least three months of funding remaining and the ability to engage a larger portion of our volunteers meaningfully at each meal to reduce volunteer drop-off.

We aim to restart when First United reopens its doors, contingent on adequate funding. We believe that higher volunteer engagement, a full dining hall's satisfaction, and the cost efficiency of a free hall space give us a strong chance of resuming financial and volunteer sustainability in that space.

We may run meals prior to this if there are enough donations to both run a meal and maintain sufficient funds to attempt a restart at First United once it reopens.

Thanks for 2024! We hope to see you again in 2025!

Hello Peace Meal Volunteers,

Thank you for your generous support in serving the Downtown Eastside community in 2024. We couldn't do it without you, our volunteer base: from those who come every month to those who only make it once a year. We appreciate you all.

During the past year, we have continued serving meals at the Downtown Eastside Community House while First United is still under construction. Although this space is smaller, we were still able to serve up to 125 appreciative guests in a single meal! It means so much to us when some of our longer-term guests express gratitude for the beautiful space with flowers, conversation, and good food -- especially the potato salad.

Our mission remains the same: to provide a safe space that gives dignity and creates connections among demographics. We still hope to move back to serving meals on Sunday to allow those who observe Shabbat to join us again. Now more than ever we would like to reconnect to our roots of bringing people of varied beliefs together to serve those in need.

Each lunch costs about $3; approximately $400 for an entire serving. So we are asking for donations to keep us going for another year. Please be generous.

Thank you again for all of your support in 2024 and years past! With kindness, warmth, and gratitude, we wish you a Happy New Year from all of us here at the Peace Meal Steering Committee.
