Our Vision is Jesus.

For the Christian, our primary concern is Jesus. Being united with him and his cross. Through his Spirit we know him and through him we glorify the Father.

I was reminded of this truth through these words of Watchman Nee that I read this morning.

In Vancouver we wake to such terrible news. May God be near all those who mourn and grieve in this terrible tragedy. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. And special grace to the Filipino community.

The gospel reading for today has a simple interpretation: According to Lord Jesus, true greatness is measured in our welcome of the least among us, in this case, a little child.

He just keeps upending the propaganda we are being fed. And the question we have to answer is this: “will he be our Lord?” And if so, “will we obey him above all others?”Unfortunately, the answer to this question - will he be our Lord - is not so much in our words but in our actions. Remember what Jesus also said?

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

For 17 years we have prayed for, supported and served the people of Ukraine. We could never have imagined our decision to “adopt” this land would find us where we now are.

What we are watching is heartbreaking, mind boggling and above all, evil. This isn’t an effort for peace, it’s an attempt at extortion. It’s not right. None of it is right. These poor souls.

On Monday, a few of our simplechurch leaders are meeting to discuss tangible ways we can support our Ukrainian friends. Pray for us, as we do. In the meantime, keep praying. Keep asking that those who do evil would be thwarted in their plans.

Just this morning, I studied Revelation 6-7. The vision paints a clear eyed picture evil and suffering in the world. But at the beginning of the vision is Jesus, in a white horse, and at the end of the vision are the saints praying.

Jesus stands ahead of all evil, and the saints bring up the rear guard with their prayers.

Stand up and pray. On your knees and pray. As we serve with practical needs, as we love with courage, we must have faith to believe that our greatest vocation and weapon is prayer.

Let’s go! 🙏
