We are rapidly using up our summer. The PNE has started and the next long weekend signals the start of school and the return to a more regular work schedule. I hope you made the most of you summer. Good things ahead though.
"When Jesus speaks . . ." is our theme this Sunday. We've noticed that when he asks questions it can sometimes be uncomfortable as he touches on things that are sometimes difficult. His questions often reveal what lies deep within.
But he also speaks without question marks. Several of his bodies of teaching are so compelling that even non-Christians reference and quote them. All I need to say is "The Sermon on the Mount" and you immediately know what I mean.
Here too, he often reveals things that are deep and hidden in the hearts of men with simple challenges. His teaching was compelling because it was easy to grasp. He used illustrations that any person in first century Israel would understand. He spoke with a special authority. He didn't need to tack on a bibliography of quoted revered scholars for people to take him seriously. Followers and critics alike responded - no - reacted when they listened to him teach.
So, that's where we are going this Sunday. What sort of things caused people to hang on every word, to follow him in mass into areas where there was no readily available food? It was the miracles for sure. But it is clear that it went way beyond that.
Jesus calls. Jesus teaches. What will our response be?
Hope to see you Sunday! Looking forward to it!

This Sunday we look at another question Jesus asked. "Where is your faith?" It was a question he asked his disciples after a particularly harrowing experience. They were caught in a storm in a boat and were afraid of dying. Jesus calmed the storm - much to their shock. Then he asked them - "Where is your faith?" I'm not sure I would have responded to the situation differently. So for me, Jesus is asking me the question as well as his disciples.
Jesus speaks about faith fairly often. He challenges religious leaders about their obvious lack of faith. He chastises whole communities because of lack of faith.
He is grieved because of the lack of faith. He commends complete outsiders for their amazing faith. I often find myself taking these things personally. I read myself into the narrative.
Clearly Jesus is trying to draw something out of people. It is not criticism and judgement. What is the faith response he is looking for?
We'll dig in this Sunday @ 10:30 am.
Hoping to see you there - 7416 Victoria Drive, Vancouver.

Over the past few weeks we've been considering some of the questions Jesus asked.
This week we are looking at some situations where we just have to ask, "Why would he ask that?" Shouldn't he know? Am missing something important? Jesus asks, "What do you want?" or some similar variant. I thought he was able to know what people wanted before they asked. Isn't that in the Bible somewhere?
Instead of being questions that have obvious answers, it turns out these questions reveal more about the character of Jesus and his approach.
More Questions That Jesus Asked!
Hoping you can be with us this Sunday @ 10:30 am.
