The Newman Association of Vancouver

The Newman Association of Vancouver Founded by the alumni of the UBC Newman Club, we are a Catholic organization focused on religious, intellectual, and social activities in the public sphere

The Newman Association of Vancouver is a Catholic organization that promotes and cultivates the religious, intellectual, and social formation of its members and associates. It is named after Saint John Henry Newman, an Anglican convert to Catholicism whose life story of conversion and writings on the idea of a university greatly inspired those working for the advancement of the liberal arts and th

e ideals of Catholic education, an inspiration that led to the start of the Newman movement around the world in the 20th century. Founded in 1940, The Newman Association extends the mission of the Newman Club of the University of British Columbia from the UBC campus to the wider community and brings issues of pertinence into discussion and dialogue through its activities in the local Church. As part of the Church that never stops in the midst of a pandemic, we have launched events and programs that continue to form fellowship and communion. These include small group scripture and video series and events such as webinar lectures that are open to the public. We love community and if you'd like to learn more about us feel free to check out our social media channels:

Every paragraph of Pope Francis' new Apostolic Letter "Desiderio desideravi" is filled with the awareness that liturgy is first and foremost about making space for the Other - the true antidote to any form of inadequate celebration.

Today is the feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, SJ, patron saint of plague victims. He served the sick during the pandemic of his time.

His life is an example of a young man who gave up an opulent life in order to go to the margins of society. https://buff.ly/3tKayIg

21 JUNE
MEMORIAL OF ST ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, RELIGIOUS

Aloysius Gonzaga (Luigi Gonzaga, 1568-1591) gave up a privileged life and a princely inheritance to live the vows of religious life even to the point of contracting the plague because of his selfless care for people already sick with it. He was only 23 when he died. His body is now kept in the church of St. Ignatius in Rome. Gonzaga was canonized in 1726 and named Patron of All Students in 1729.

Let us pray.
O God, giver of heavenly gifts,
who in Saint Aloysius Gonzaga
joined penitence to a wonderful innocence of life,
grant through his merits and intercession,
that, though we have failed to follow him in innocence,
we may imitate him in penitence.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

St Luigi Gonzaga, pray for us. 🙏🏽
