On Sunday, talked about Scripture being connected to a whole story. Its authors saw themselves as participating in the same story. Jesus saw himself as an embodiment of the story that came before him (Matt 5:17-18), and Jesus empowered his followers to continue the story (John 14:12).

The chapter headings of this story might look something like this:

Chapter 1:
“A good world and loving Creator”

Chapter 2:
“Missing the mark and a persistent Creator”

Chapter 3:
“Gathering a people to offer shalom”

Chapter 4:
“Creator joins creation to show them how it’s done”

Chapter 5:
“Jesus followers pass on the story that transformed them”

Chapter 6:
“Unfinished: Braiding this time and place into the sacred story of Scripture”

Join us in person or online. Gatherings are on Sundays, 10:30am at The Japanese Hall (487 Alexander St.) A simple live-stream is also available via YouTube.

As part of our Sacred Story series, we’re offering this free download: a reflective guide for individuals and groups featuring practices designed to help you explore your relationship with Scripture—past, present, and future.

Our hope is that these exercises will help identify barriers and longings, create shared language around how we engage Scripture, and open up creative ways of encountering the sacred story.

More than anything, we hope they create space for conversation, curiosity, and deeper engagement.

On Sunday we began a new series on Scripture called “Sacred Story”.

There was a time of sharing in response to the question: “What are you longing for in your relationship to scripture?”

Here are some of the responses:

“My Grandma’s relationship with scripture was as a place of solace- I’m longing for scripture to be a place of solace.”

“I want to understand what the role of the Holy Spirit is in interpreting scripture and how can you trust it’s the Holy Spirit you’re hearing?”

“I would love to be able to integrate the encouragement of the poetry with the historical fact and context.”

“I want to understand what a healthy and responsible relationship to scripture looks like; I’m amazed by the general lack of biblical illiteracy in Christian communities. What does it look like to bring critical thought to scripture at an individual and collective level?”

“I want to understand the stories and not debate words - I want to feel the power of the story by immersing in it through imagination.”

“I want to want to read scripture and not feel that it’s a chore.”

“We can have baggage when we have intense discipleship and trauma attached to scripture; but also how can we engage in a way that fosters hunger and desire? Can we reconcile trauma through scripture and not throw the baby out with bath water?”

Sacred Story: A Sermon Series on Scripture
May 24 - June 28

On Sundays at Artisan, you’ll encounter a lot of scripture. We speak scripture aloud in our opening prayers, in the collect, in song lyrics, and at the benediction. And we read a lectionary Psalm and NT reading each week before someone preaches on a passage from the Bible.

On occasion, visitors to our community have been surprised by how much scripture is in our gathering liturgy. Artisan holds space for different theological convictions on topics that have become culturally polarizing. And some people assume this means we don’t take scripture seriously. But we do!

This Sunday we are starting a new series on Scripture. Think of it as a gentle DTR (define the relationship) conversation about the Bible. We’ll do it by describing what already is. In other words, how does scripture already function in our shared life? How do preachers at Artisan prepare their sermons? How does community, healing, and imagination shape the way we read scripture? What have we found helpful for regrowing a nourishing relationship with the Bible, even after uprooting experiences? How does scripture gather, heal, and empower us?

We hope this discussion will give us some shared language going forward. But more than that we want to support each other with wisdom, resources, and space to dialogue–as we grow in our engagement of scripture.
If you’d like to read some of the resources we’ve found helpful, here’s a list.

Take a deep breath and ease in. This conversation will be full of love and playfulness.

What questions do you have about the Bible? Feel free to post them here.

Hello Artisan Church,

Once again, we won’t be gathering at the Japanese Hall this Sunday. But this time it’s not because of a power outage or a festival — it’s because many of us will be up at Timberline Ranch for our annual church retreat.

We’ll be back together at the Hall on Sunday, May 24 as we begin a new six-week series on Scripture.

One of the realities of being a portable church in a shared space is that, from time to time, our regular Sunday rhythm gets interrupted. Rather than seeing these Sundays as inconveniences, we’re trying to receive them as opportunities to gather in different ways and in different places throughout the year.

Here are a few upcoming Sundays to note:
* July 5 — Baptisms at New Brighton Beach
* August 2 — No gathering, Powell Street Festival
* September 6 — DTES Churches in the Park

You can always find upcoming gathering changes and off Sundays at: artisanchurch.ca/gatherings.

Have a great long weekend, and for those coming to retreat — we’ll see you soon!

On Sunday, we wrapped up our Art of Neighbouring series with a challenge to think about what it means to love. All sermons in the series can be found at artisanchurch.ca/sermons

“Learning to love our neighbours as ourselves is a mix of body wisdom, mind wisdom, and heart wisdom…a communal process of discernment, action, reflection, repeated for a lifetime.” – Erin Glanville

Love is “the will to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth.” – Bell Hooks

NOTE: We will not be gathering at the Japanese Hall this Sunday, May 17 as most of us will be at our annual Church Retreat. We’re back at the hall on May 24

Hello Artisan Church,

BC Hydro has scheduled a block-wide power outage for this Sunday, May 3. Because of this, we won’t be able to hold our gathering that morning.

While unexpected, this may actually be a gift! We’re in the middle of our neighbouring series, and this gives us one of the most valuable resources for neighbouring: time.

Consider using this Sunday to be with and for your neighbours in simple, intentional ways:

* Take a slow walk around your neighbourhood
* Spend time in your front yard or common space
* Learn (or write down) the names and occupations of your immediate neighbours
* Share some baking
* Wash someone’s car
* Host a casual brunch

If you’re looking for inspiration, listen or re-listen to sermons from our Art of Neighbouring series at artisanchurch.ca/sermons.

We’ll be back on Sunday, May 10th for the conclusion of the series, then Church Retreat the following weekend.

On Sunday, Karen Reed shared her story of generous hospitality and faithful presence her neighbourhood on Parker Street in East Van. You can listen to the story at artisanchurch.ca/sermons.

She talked about subverting the dominate narrative of fear and isolation with tangible acts of generosity – making our homes more public, and living a lifestyle of welcome.

NEXT WEEK, May 3, due to an unforeseen power outage we will cancel our gathering and take this opportunity to be in our neighbourhoods. Stay tuned for more details.

This Sunday, Karen Reed will be speaking as part of our Art of Neighbouring series! 🎨🐴🐗

Karen seeks to live faithfully as a good neighbour in the East Vancouver community of Commercial Drive, believing that we flourish as we help our neighbours to flourish. She is interested in what it means to live well in the city and seeks out ways to disturb the dominant narrative of fear and isolation with subversive acts of generous hospitality.

For the first time in her life, she lives slow and rooted, living 90% of her life within a 30 minute walk of her house and has given up her car for a bike. Karen loves to cook, grow food, enjoys a good cup of coffee with a book, and all kinds of water sports. She lives a shared life and is having a blast at this stage of life, discovering the sacred ordinary in her rhythm of life in the city. Karen has worked most of her life in the non-profit world, served on numerous non-profit boards and after many years, eventually earned her MA from Regent College.
