Psalm 23 The Shepherd With Me by Jennifer Rothschild
Verse 6 - Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
This is the final verse of Psalm 23. David has come to this conclusion after journeying through green pastures, down paths of righteousness, through dark valleys, and into the banquet hall of God. He looks back at his life while at the same time looking forward. He affirms that God’s goodness and mercy have followed and will continue to follow him all his days.
Let’s look at the word, “Surely”, a little word with big impact on the way we live.
This Hebrew word is strong, positive assertion of truth. The Hebrew word for surely translates as “certainly, completely and only”. These words don’t leave much doubt that what follows them is unbending, unaltered, non-negotiable truth.
David looked back at his life and settled on two things had followed and would follow him. He was certain it was true that only goodness and mercy follow him.
In Psalm 51:10 - David prayed, “create in
me a clean heart oh God, and renew a right spirit in me”. God has blotted our our sin when we confess it and restores us to joy in His salvation. David looked back at his life and he didn’t see sin, he saw God’s mercy. He didn’t see shame and guilt.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I pray where there has been guilt and shame in my life, may I see only goodness in its place. Where there has been mistakes, let me now see only mercy. Amen
