Every year, I try my best to volunteer overseas. I still remember how eye-opening my first trips were. I saw how many people live in a very modest way. Living in similar conditions as them made me appreciate what I have much more.

At this stage of my life, it’s easy for me to focus on work, goals, hobbies, and my own future. But those trips have changed what I want my life to be about. I’ve realized it’s not only about satisfying physical needs, but also helping people know that they are loved and valued by God. Material things only last for so long. But seeing people smile, feel cared for, and know they are loved by God stays with them much longer. It motivates me to not live only for myself, but to love and care for others the way God loves them.

We celebrate the encouraging growth of Light and Love Home’s after-school programs in South Africa!

Our after-school program in Maganagobuswa started in February 2024. Currently, we are supporting 24 children through tutoring and mentorship. A special highlight is the involvement of students from Mamelodi High School, who volunteer their time to tutor younger children. Through this program, many students have found the motivation to attend school. Parents have expressed their gratitude when they saw their children’s grades improve.

Building on this, we started an after-school program in Marikana in May 2025. It is now supporting around 35 children. We are encouraged by the positive feedback from parents, who have also observed improvements in their children’s academic performance.

It is truly a joy to see the fruits of these programs. We look forward to even greater growth ahead!

We make people smile when we do things out of love.

We started a new initiative on April 11. The participants are a group of ladies who like arts and crafts. They are using their skills and spare time to make different accessories to support Light and Love Home. Those accessories will be sold during charity sales or gifted to those in need. This group of ladies continues to welcome those who are interested to join in. For this initiative, a resident from a seniors home in Richmond donated some small scarves that she had knitted by herself. She is more than 90 years old!

On the first day of this activity, these ladies learned how to embroider roses. They plan to attach these items to different things. This might include earrings, the scarves that the Richmond senior donated and other small accessories. Afterwards, they plan to host a charity sale. These hand-made products are a meaningful way to express love to moms on Mother’s Day. They can also be a great way to fundraise for Light and Love Home! Please support us!

I often felt lonely when I was young, and I didn’t know how to express myself. I always felt insecure about how others thought of me. When I experienced the genuine care and love of the church, I realized that I had always been loved by many around me, I just wasn’t aware of it. I started to learn how to love. Love is long-term companionship and detailed care.

We travel to remote areas to care for single-parent families. We visit seniors who live alone to make them feel loved. When I break down the barriers and share my story with others, I feel blessed. I hope that anyone who’s alone can enjoy what it’s like being part of our warm family.

In North India, a couple of our building projects are nearing completion. As many of you may know, in the remote villages of India, many families do not have toilets. They have to walk far each time to a field or a river to take care of their basic needs that we can safely handle at home.

There’s a family that frequently opens up their home for community gatherings. Recently they’ve experienced hardship. The elderly mother had a fall and could not walk or squat down. Light and Love Home sponsored the construction of a toilet stall for this family. This not only benefits the 11 family members who live in this home, but also the community that frequently uses this family home as a gathering place.

Another building project that is near completion is a well. Families, especially women, used to have to walk long distances to fetch water for their daily use. By having a well in this community, we are helping at least one hundred people on a daily basis to gain access to drinking water!

Winter has passed. The world around us is quickly “springing” into life. This is also a time when I walk around in Vancouver and see how it is full of life and beauty. What used to look barren and bare is now budding or blossoming with new life.

When I read the articles every month, I feel the hope and the beauty in this dark and seemingly gloomy world. I understand more why we call our organization “Light and Love Home”. Without God, even when we have the heart to love others, we cannot bring “light” to their lives. When we cooperate with God, He gives us light and love, so we can introduce His Light and Love to others. God can personally help each one of them and light up their paths. When I see the smiles of our beneficiaries in our newsletters, I know we made their lives better. What makes it even more meaningful is that we know God can make their lives light up and blossom.

God bless you.

Shanta Bhandari’s dream to visit Vancouver, Canada finally came true!

His arrival brought great encouragement to many in Vancouver. We celebrated his love and commitment for the more than 100 children that he and his wife have helped in the past.

Together, we recalled how God has been giving us so much grace. For example, 12 years ago we needed to expand the building for our children’s home. It was a miracle that we managed to get a $100,000 USD donation from an American company that was running a social media competition. This was enough to cover the construction expenses.

When we asked the audience who would like to embrace Shanta, many people - both children and adults - stepped forward and lined up. Through our hugs, we showed our appreciation towards Shanta for his unconditional and selfless love over the children in the past two decades.

At the recent charity fundraising event for Light and Love Charity Services, we were honoured to welcome Shanta, the “Papa” of the Children’s Home in Nepal.
He shared powerful stories about the children he rescued. The stories of hardship, hope, and new beginnings moved everyone in the room. There was one story about how a little boy was rescued from a broken home. He is now happily growing up in the Children’s Home. This gave us a personal glimpse into the lives of the children there and how our support is making a difference.

The event was filled with vibrant food booths, exciting game booths, and lively Nepali dance performances that brought everyone together. Through the generosity of everyone who attended, we raised over $1,500 CAD to support Light and Love Home!
“I am grateful that the children in our programs can hear stories about the experiences of children in Nepal. I feel they are more aware of different needs and situations.” - Azra Hui (a volunteer leader with Light and Love Home children’s program)

From a young age, my goal had been to make enough money so that my parents could afford to retire. When I was in my second year of university, I thought about changing my major and going abroad to study. This way I could find a job with higher earnings. This is all from seeing my parents getting older and their health declining. I had already started the process of applying and taking the required tests. But then I thought - was making more money all that I wanted?

Afterwards, I started my work experience as a dietician at a hospital, and met many patients who were at the end of their lives. Some were facing death and suffering unimaginable pain. At that moment, even the best treatments could not heal them. I really wanted to help them. I realized that even if I made a lot of money, I would not be able to save their lives - this changed my goal of just wanting to make money. I would rather do what I can to help those in need.

In the days ahead, I want to go help people in need across different places in the world. I can empower others to learn about healthy eating as a way to prevent many sicknesses.

As many of you may know, we have been running an ongoing Leadership Program in Zambia since 2020. There are a few reasons why we started this program. We wanted to teach the students life skills and build personal qualities that can benefit them their whole lives. Many of them have a lot of free time after school, so this is a good way to spend that time. This program also helps to protect more students from potential bad influences.

We want to share the testimony of one of our past members, Sevas, who used to join our program when he was a student. He was recently promoted to be a supervisor at the local airport.

“Joining the Leadership Program changed my life. I learned to be patient, self-controlled, and to put service before self. This transformation helped me grow professionally, leading to my appointment as a supervisor at the airport. It also strengthened my faith and character. The program didn’t just teach me leadership — it transformed me.”
