Everyday Equity

Sometimes, without even realizing it, we create hierarchies through the language we use. We can unintentionally make one thing seem normal, preferred, or expected, while positioning another as different or less than.

Today I made cookies for an event that contained wheat. I also provided packaged gluten-free cookies.

As I was labeling them, I caught myself wondering what to call them.

If I labeled one "regular" and the other "gluten-free," what message would that send? If one is regular, does that make the other irregular? If one is normal, does that make the other abnormal?

The cookies themselves weren't making a value judgment. I was.

So I settled on "wheat cookie" and "gluten-free cookie."

Just labels. No ranking. No suggestion that one is the standard and the other is the exception.

It was a small thing. But small things shape how we see one another.

What everyday words do we use without noticing the assumptions they carry?

Today I sat at our turquoise table and connected with our neighbours.

I shared a cookie, access to our washroom, and some power with a man carrying all of his belongings with him.

I heard the story of a sweet dog who, after a rough start in Texas, was lovingly rehomed and even handled her first Nova Scotia winter with grace.

I chatted with some children walking by with their mother about their awesome dinosaur and Hello Kitty shirts.

I shared cookies with Rev. Marty, who happened to be driving by and stopped to catch up.

I waved at many people. Some looked at me strangely. Others smiled.

There was no bulletin. No sermon. No sanctuary.

Just neighbours, stories, kindness, listening, laughter, and connection.

THIS IS CHURCH RIGHT HERE.

Church happens wherever people make room for one another, share what they have, and recognize the sacred worth of those they meet along the way.
