St. Paul's Anglican Church

St. Paul's Anglican Church This building is the third Anglican (Church of England) church to be built on this site. The first was built in 1729 and the second in 1820. St. Earle.

The first service to be held in the present church was Christmas Eve, 1892. Paul’s is the latest of the three Canadian churches designed by the American architect Stephen C. The other two are in Nova Scotia at Digby and Windsor. Paul’s was designated a Heritage Structure in 1989; in 1991 the Church was given a Southcott Award for its significant contribution to the retention of the built heritage

of Newfoundland. The tower, 102 feet to the top of the spire, was rebuilt in 1981 and covered with copper flashing. The church bell, a gift of Robert Slade of Poole in 1833 for the previous church, is still in use. The hand-carved altar was given by six priests who were born in the Parish. The font is of particular interest, having a pulley system attached to the font lid and the descending dove. The pipe organ is hand pumped.
