A Message from Adam's House:
Using Word of Welcome Bibles at Adam House
Adam House is a refugee reception center, serving over 2000 refugee claimants (unsponsored refugees) since 2002. Here, men, women, and families can find hope for their future, as we pray with them through their difficulties, and celebrate their successes. Many regard us as the first home in Canada and come back to visit long after they have been settled. As a non-profit Christian organization, we are committed to sharing the word of God with residents and we look to serve His purposes in operating Adam House.
We are grateful to the Bible Society for the donation of their Word of Welcome Bibles. These are Contemporary English Version Bibles which are especially useful for us here at Adam House in making the Bible more accessible. As most of our residents have English as their second language, or little to no knowledge of the Bible, they appreciate simpler language used. This is not only easier to understand, but allows them to engage more openly in discussion.
Here at Adam House, the Bibles are used on a weekly basis during our weekly Bible Fun Time. Around 12 refugees consistently attend, and a pastor from a local church explains a passage using the Word of Welcome Bibles. This is a useful ministry in reaching out to refugees interested in Christianity, but also helping Christians grow deeper in their faith. It allows refugees to develop friendships with locals in Toronto, that they can carry with them past Adam House. The Bibles are also often used as gifts of encouragement. A staff member will often write a personalized note inside, and gift it to any refugee who would like a personal copy.
These Bibles are a huge blessing to us and many refugees at Adam House. They help ease the transition and language barrier many face when they first move to Canada.
