Wine Before Breakfast

Wine Before Breakfast Wine Before Breakfast is a weekly Eucharist service of the Christian Reformed Campus Ministry at UofT Time: Tuesday mornings at 7.22 am (during term).

Place: Church of the Redeemer on Bloor and Avenue (https://theredeemer.ca/)

Rooted in the belief that Christian community is sustained and nurtured through a regular diet of Word and Sacrament, this service seeks to form such community at the University of Toronto and beyond. Through rich liturgy, creative music and provocative preaching we attempt to bring together Christians for prayer and communion with God and one another.

Wellspring Worship Centre is a teeming church community in North York, pastored by James Sholl and attended by Sarah Murley who may be familiar to folks to the Wine Before Breakfast and Wycliffe communities. This Saturday they welcome Joash Thompson and Brian Wrecker, who are each launching new books that discuss the liberating nature of Jesus, calling us to re-examine some of our inherited beliefs. The discussion will be conducted by Sheila Gregoire and promises to be very meaningful, challenging and, hopefully, liberating!

Learn more about our musical guest Deb Whalen-Blaize.

Deb is a songwriting and guitar playing singer who needs music to mean something. Growing up singing in church probably had something to do with that. Faith and music have remained hand in hand in her life, and her young dreams of folk-rock stardom have been tempered into carving out some musical space in Toronto, both among the singer-songwriter crowd and in the Anglican Diocese. Working for 13 years as the music director at Wine Before Breakfast, a weekly campus ministry Eucharist service based primarily at Wycliffe College, she developed a deftness at incorporating singer-songwriter music among hymns as a way to engage scripture. Throughout those years, she was invited to offer this unique music ministry in different churches around our Diocese, including Church of the Transfiguration (where she served as the parish missioner for 5 years), Christ Church Deer Park’s monthly Church on Tap service and at the Cathedral’s Leonard Cohen themed Eucharist service as part of the Snell Lecture Series.

She is pleased to perform at the Bishops Company Dinner with a few of her friends, offering a selection of familiar tunes you may have heard on the radio, that hit a little different within the context of our faith.

See Deb perform on Friday, October 17th. Get your seats here. https://bishopscompanytoronto.ca/the-bishops-company-dinner-2/

Chceck out this brief update that includes some of the great descriptions about the graduate fellowship that the community shared back in September, and please consider campus ministry as one of the organizations that you support either on or as you start thinking about year-end gifts.

Are you looking for an Advent Bible Study to do with friends or your church community? Are you struggling with how to respond to the overwhelming sorrow and loss present in the world today? The writers of the Psalms were also struggling with deep loss: violence, poverty, war. And, in the midst of such losses, they called God to account, demanded justice, and professed hope that the Creator God would set things right.

This fall Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat will be teaching an online four-week course: "Inhabiting the Psalms: Ancient Songs for a Time of Crisis" that weaves these ancient texts with more recent musical and poetic reworkings of the Psalms. Sunday evenings Nov 26-Dec 17. Go to www.bibleremixed.ca for more info.
