We grieve and are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded last evening at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival, steps from the doors of our parish church.

We hold in our prayers the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, those who have been injured, all who witnessed this horrific act of violence, and our neighbours throughout the community who are struggling to come to terms with what has happened. We also give thanks for the courage and professionalism of the Toronto Police Service, paramedics, firefighters and all first responders who ran towards danger to bring help and comfort while others sought safety.

As followers of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we are pained whenever violence shatters the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Events such as these leave us with feelings of fear and even anger. In times like these it is easy to lose sight of our shared humanity and to allow that fear to shape our response.

Our faith calls us to a different way. Even in the darkest moments, we believe that God has not and will never abandon his people. Throughout Scripture we are reminded that God stands with those who suffer, especially the poor, the vulnerable and the innocent. He hears the cries of those who call upon him and continues to work for justice, healing, and reconciliation.

Now more than ever, our community needs people who will choose hope over despair, compassion over hatred, and love over violence. As Christians, we are called to be bearers of Christ's light, refusing to surrender to fear or bitterness, and instead witnessing to the peace, mercy and hope that are found in him.

We invite all who are hurting to know that they are not alone. Our church remains a place of prayer, welcome and support for all who seek comfort in these difficult days.


Loving God,
we commend to your care all who have been affected by the violence on St. Clair Avenue.
We pray for those who have died,
for their families and friends, for those recovering from injury,
and for everyone whose sense of safety has been shaken.
Bless our neighbourhood with your peace.
Strengthen those who protect and serve our city,
comfort those who are afraid,
and help us, as the people of St Michael and All Angels,
to be a sign of your healing presence,
offering hope where there is despair,
love where there is hatred,
and light where there is darkness.
Through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.
