St. Bernadette grew up with very little education. She struggled in school and did not learn to read and write well until she was around fourteen years old. Yet God did not choose her because she was educated or important. He chose a poor, humble girl who was willing to listen.

Years later, Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. She lived a quiet life and left behind only a small number of writings, including personal notes, prayers, and letters to her family. Her words show how deeply she wanted to belong to Jesus. In one prayer, she asked Him for the daily bread of humility, obedience, and charity.

After her death, her body was exhumed several times and was found to be remarkably preserved. Today, her remains rest in Nevers, France.

Her life reminds us that holiness does not depend on how gifted, educated, or noticed we are. It begins with a humble heart that keeps saying yes to God.

St. Bernadette, pray for us. 🙏

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Matt 18:15–20), Jesus teaches us how to correct a brother or sister. What is so rich here is the pursuit of the issue with a deep care for the person in question and also for the entire family of the Church (since love is our constant call). And then the wonderful conclusion: “If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.”

This sounds, at first, like a total rejection, but then we recall how Jesus treated the Gentiles and tax collectors—eating with them, pursuing them, drawing them into his circle. There might be a moment of rejection and expulsion in the process of fraternal correction, but it is only provisional and only for the sake of eventual reconciliation.

St. Augustine, who was never afraid to speak the hard truth when necessary, followed the recommendations of Matthew 18 very concretely. Over the table in his episcopal residence where he dined with the priests of his diocese hung a sign that read: “If you speak ill of your brother here, you are not welcome at this table.”

Friends, for the wokeist philosophy that dominates today, empathy—feeling the feelings of the other and not harming those feelings—is treated as a supreme value. But while empathy is perfectly good and decent, the Bible teaches that love, not empathy, is the supreme value. And love does not mean, primarily, feeling the feelings of the other or not hurting those feelings; it means willing the good of the other—and that can be, as Dostoevsky said, “a harsh and dreadful thing.” https://youtu.be/bDAXwFKONws
