It’s Super Saint Sunday time!! Vincent’s super saint this week is St. Francis of Assisi!! ✨

Born from a wealthy family, Francis loved feasting, rhetorics of heroism and being in the spotlight. However, none of the wealth and riches of this earthly satisfied him. He eventually realized that the only thing that would bring him true joy was union with Christ. In front of his father and the bishop of Assisi, he stripped himself naked, surrendering himself totally to God. This spirituality of poverty has drawn thousands over the world - they vow to surrender their lives totally to God, forgoing all earthly attachments. He died not rich in money, but rich spiritually. His mortal remains now lie in a grandeur Basilica but in a plain lowly stone tomb on the third floor in that Basilica named after him.

This weeks Super Saint Sunday is chosen by Marianne! one of her favourite saint, St. Hildegard of Bingen! ✨

She was a Benedictine nun and abbess of her monastery. She is known for her mystical encounters, and feminism through her art.

I have only learned of St Gertrude quite recently, but she is one very influential saint in my life. Feminism is very prominent in my life, and she has inspired me to carry out feminism in my work in the Church and in my everyday life. Women are an integral part of our world. Her art unites biblical themes with the accounts of women, and she uses the women in her monastery in her plays. Through her work of art, she inspires and empowers women.

This weeks Super Saint Sunday is Maggie’s!! Presenting St. Augustine!! ✨✨

Perhaps the most relatable and inspiring saint, St.Augustine of Hippo had a huge conversion from his former life. As the son of St.Monica, Augustine lived much of his early years in sin and false beliefs. Although highly intelligent, Augustine wasted away his life going to parties, drinking, and practicing Manichaean beliefs. His mother, a devout Christian, prayed 17 years for her son’s conversion and in late August of 386, Augustine converted to Catholicism. Writing an account of his conversion through his book Confessions, St.Augustine recalled hearing a child singing “Take up and read!” which led him to open up the letters of St.Paul and to realize that he needed to put away all impurity and live in the image and likeness of God, which all humans were created in. In St.Augustine’s Confessions, one can find the redemptive love God has given to all of us through His Son, Jesus Christ and just how detrimental sinning is to our relationship with Him. God has called all of us to a pure and imitative life of His Son, Jesus and St.Augustine empowers us by showing us that finding one’s path back to God through a life of repentance, prayer, and purity is possible!

Julia’s Super Saint Sunday this week is St. Kateri Tekakwitha! ✨

Losing her family to smallpox, she was raised by her uncle, chief of a Mohawk tribe. At 19, she converted to Catholicism and took a vow of chastity. Unfavourable to those around her, she fled to a Christian Indigenous community outside Montreal. The moment she died (at 24), her scarred skin was clear; a priest friend painted the only accurate portrait of her after her death, which was used at her canonization as the first Native American saint.
Having been nicknamed “Kateri,” having acted as her in a play, hearing her story from the Indigenous people at the church where she rests, having visited her grave, and knowing she was my age when she was baptised, has led me to develop a great love for this young saint. For many years, she’s been one of my favourites; I look to her example as I journey through my own life.
