At least 25 Christians, including a two-month-old infant, were killed in separate weekend attacks on predominantly Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. On July 11, armed Fulani militants attacked K*m and Wereng-Comp in Plateau State, killing nine members of the same family and critically injuring the village leader. Hours later, gunmen raided Nobi community in Benue State, killing at least 16 people. Locals reported delayed or inadequate security response in both incidents, amid ongoing concerns over repeated violence, land seizures, and religious hostility targeting Christian farming communities in the region. At least 20 people, including a church leader and a pregnant woman, were killed in a brutal attack on the predominantly Christian farming community of Kawel in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. The assault took place in the early hours of Sunday, 21 June, when armed attackers targeted the village, shooting victims including Rev. Markus Nyam outside a church building. Three years after deadly sectarian violence erupted in India’s Manipur state in 2023, Christians from the predominantly Kuki-Zo community continue to face a grave and escalating humanitarian crisis. The clashes, in which Hindu Meitei groups targeted Kuki-Zo areas, left at least 258 people dead, thousands of homes destroyed, and nearly 59,000 people still living in relief camps as of March 2026. Despite the violence subsiding, ethnic divisions remain entrenched through government-controlled buffer zones, with Christian leaders criticizing the lack of accountability, justice for victims of murder and sexual violence, and obstacles preventing displaced Christians from returning to their homes and places of worship.
