....this still makes me weepy in light of the politics today. Jack wasn't perfect and yes, he was a politician...but there was a class and genteel sense about him that brought integrity to the job and a sense of civility. I think he would have been pleased with Prime Minister Mark Carney's statements yesterday as he leads us through these troubling days.

Jack is buried just up the street from where I live and there is an old phrase that I think might have been well suited for his headstone, "step softly, a dream is buried here". It would have been nice to see some more of Jack's dreams be realized - but let's start with some more affordable housing to help people get off the streets - and maybe...just maybe, some day a National Basic Income to help lift people out of poverty in this wealthy nation and create hope in the hearts of those who line up weekly at the food banks across this country.

In light of the attack at the Pride Parade in Germany, we can't let it overwhelm us. It is awful and heart breaking and meant to instill fear, not to mention bolster hatred amongst those who are cheering - but there is always light, even in the darkest days - when we look for it. My friend Bernie sent me this picture after being at the Pride Parade in Belfast the other day. She later visit the City Hall in Belfast and this was one of the windows that greeted her.
Love is all around us, even in the grief. I'm sure that this window has saved the lives of a few young people who would have been terrified to think they could never live into who they really were. But to walk into a civic building and see that window - and hear the message that they were ok - just as they were...it's a pretty powerful thing. These are the subtle little messages that we cling to, when times are tough and hate rears its ugly head.

Our prayers are with the LGBTQ community in Berlin, Germany, as a terrorist drove a van into a Pride festival event last night, and also attacked people with a machete.

One person was killed and at least 29 others injured. The suspect has been identified and is still at large and being sought by police.

An attack on one LGBTQ community is an attack on LGBTQ communities everywhere.

We pray for the victims in Berlin, for their families and for those responding to this tragedy as medics, police and community leaders. We pray also for the police as they search for the person or persons who wreaked this chaos on an event meant to celebrate the community, solidarity and joy of Pride.

Bring your comfort, your justice and your healing, dear God.

In the name of the One who brings peace. Amen.

The countdown is on! This Saturday, July 11th, Repair Café Willowdale is coming to Lansing United Church.

Do you have a beloved item that’s broken, worn out, or simply not working the way it should? Before you throw it away, bring it in and let’s see if we can give it a second chance together.

The talented volunteers repair clothing, small appliances, electronics, jewelry, bicycles, household items, and much more — completely free of charge. Beyond repairs, Repair Café is about sharing skills, reducing waste, preserving treasured belongings, and strengthening community connections.

Some of the items that come through carry decades of memories. Others are treasured gifts, family keepsakes, or everyday items people simply aren’t ready to part with. We believe that many things deserve another opportunity before ending up in a landfill.

📅 When: Saturday, July 11, 2026
⏰ Public Hours: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Where: Lansing United Church
49 Bogert Avenue, North York

On World Refugee Day, we stand in solidarity with refugees and displaced people around the world, honouring their courage and resilience. As a community of faith we affirm that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and belonging.

World Refugee Day reminds us that welcome matters. Our staff team includes someone who came to Canada as an LGBT refugee and now helps build community here at Lansing. We are grateful for the gifts, experiences, and perspectives that refugees bring to our shared life.
