Last night our community came together for an important and timely conversation about Confronting Antisemitism/Antizionism in our community. We were honoured to be joined by Beth Tikvah’s Rabbi Jarrod Grover, Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism - ALCCA, Mark Sandler, CIJA’s Richard Marceau and retired Inspector, Hank Idsinga. A special thank you to Moderator, Alex Pierson. The conversations didn’t end when the panel concluded and it speaks to just how important this issue is and the work that needs to be done.

Dear Friends,

This morning, we awoke to devastating news from Australia. This terrible shooting was an act of hatred directed not only at innocent people, but at the very idea of Jewish light, Jewish presence, and Jewish joy. It is especially chilling to learn that this was meant to be the first public menorah lighting of Chanukah anywhere in the world. It was an attempt to spread fear and to make Jews hesitate before gathering, singing, and shining openly.

It is natural, in moments like these, to feel shaken. Chanukah, however, was never meant to be observed only when the world feels calm or secure. Chanukah itself was born in uncertainty, courage, and resilience.

For those who have RSVPed and will be joining us at Beth Tikvah tonight, we encourage you to come with intention and with pride. Being together—lighting candles, singing, and standing side by side—is itself a powerful response.

And for those who will be celebrating Chanukah at home, or in quieter spaces, know that your light matters just as much. Every candle lit, in every window, on every table, pushes back against the darkness and connects us to one another across distance and circumstance.

Your safety is our highest priority. We coordinate closely with local authorities, and we will continue to remain vigilant to ensure the security of our synagogue.

Wherever and however you will be lighting candles tonight, may you feel strengthened by the knowledge that you are part of a people that has never let fear have the final word.

With prayers, strength, and hope.
