The Toronto Oratory

The Toronto Oratory A congregation of Roman Catholic priests and lay-brothers, living in community according to the spirit of St Philip Neri Philip Neri.

Saint Philip’s Seminary is an apostolate of the Oratory of St. It has been authorized to grant degrees by the province of Ontario. It accepts students for the priesthood who are sponsored by their diocese or by their religious order. The Oratory of Saint Philip Neri is a congregation of Roman Catholic priests and lay-brothers who live together in community bound together by no formal vows but only

with the bond of charity. This way of life originated from St Philip Neri’s efforts to make the word of God and the life of virtue accessible and attractive to the laity and, in fact, to all people of Rome in the sixteenth century. John Henry Newman brought the Oratory into the English-speaking world when he founded the Birmingham Oratory in 1848. He found Saint Philip singularly appealing, especially his ability to speak to the hearts of so many diverse people. When Newman was created Cardinal in 1879, he adopted the motto ‘Cor ad cor loquitur’ – ‘The heart speaks to the heart’ – to testify to his belief that evangelization is most effective through direct contact with the lived experience of Christianity.

In honour of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of this community, the Toronto Oratory presents a concert of Baroque music that might have been heard in the mid-1600s at the Oratory church in Rome, the Chiesa Nuova. Singers from the Toronto Oratory Choir will collaborate with guest vocalists and period instrumentalists to perform works by the major Roman composers of the period, including Giacomo Carissimi, Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Foggia, and others. The program will include some rare, anonymous compositions recently rediscovered from the performing repertory of the Chiesa Nuova. Freewill offerings can be made, and there will be a Wine and cheese reception in the hall afterwards.
