On the new moon day, Maha Shivaratri is worshipped. This is an annual worship in the Hindu month of Maagha.

There are various versions of the origins of this celebration. Some believe that on this day Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. Others believe that Shivaratri is worshipped on the day when Lord Shiva saved the world by drinking poison.

Maha Shivaratri is the most popular worship observed. Devotees observe a strict fast for a day. Maha Shivaratri is worshipped either during the day or during the night. During the night worship, women and men come together and sing religious hymns throughout the night.
