This is a good thing to consider when discerning one’s vocation in life. When we break discernment down into steps, we very quickly discover that the next step is never as big as we think it is.

The moment you swap the statement 'I can't handle this' for the question 'what is the immediate next move?', you manually override your brain’s default settings.

You effectively reroute energy from the amygdala’s alarm system to the prefrontal cortex’s command center.

That is the definition of neuroplasticity: thinking a new way to build a new brain.

Today, January 2, is the Feast of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen. It is a special day for the Basilian congregation as we celebrate the Feast Day of our Patron. Basil, who was Bishop of Caesarea, is known for his writings on the Divinity of the Holy Spirit. Even though he died in 379 AD, his writings were instrumental in the work of the First Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, which added the section on the Holy Spirit to the Nicene Creed.

St. Basil also believed that certain aspects of secular culture could help people to lead a Christian Life. He recognized that there were elements of virtue present in the Greek writings prevalent in his day, and that those elements, when properly understood, could help a person to grow in virtue.

St. Basil also formed a Monastic community, and was an early practitioner of what we today would call social justice. His monastic community was dedicated to serving the poor and the needy, and his Monastic rule is still followed by monks in the Eastern Catholic Churches to this day.

St. Basil the Great, pray for us!

Happy 203rd Birthday to the Basilian Fathers! It was on this day in 1822 that the Ten Founders of the Basilian Congregation gathered in Annonay, France, and chose Fr. Joseph Lapierre as the first Superior General. Inspired by these 10 men, may God continue to bless the work that we do as a congregation!

As we celebrate the Feast of our Patron, Saint Basil the Great, we also give thanks to God for the Ordination of two of our brothers today in Colombia. May God bless Eduard and Osman as they are Ordained to the Priesthood today in Bogota!

We also pray that the Holy Spirit will guide more young men to discern vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life.

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Nativity, we recall his birth into human history, in order to bring the light of God’s salvation into the world. We also recall Mary’s yes to God, and the way in which she fulfilled God’s will through her life.

In this Christmas season, we ask: how is God calling you to share the Good News, and to bring Christ to others?

Merry Christmas from the Basilian Fathers!
