The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Toronto was established in 1972 in collaboration with members of the Caribbean (mainly Jamaican) community in Toronto. The congregation remained as a Mission

until 1984, lacking a priest and a permanent place of worship. In the same year, Rev. Messale Engeda came as a priest in charge of the newly established and growing congregation in the Greater Toronto Area. In 1986, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Toronto ,with its 500 registered members, acquired a modest property located at 425 Vaughan Road. However, due to the growing population of Ethiopian community in the Greater Toronto Area and its peculiar needs, a second Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in the name of Menbere Berhan Kidest Mariam (Saint Mary) was established in 1991. During the years between 1991 and 1996, the Church began to provide full service to its congregation at a rented Anglican Church located at 40 Westmoreland Avenue in Toronto. Our Creed

We believe in one God, in the Lord the Father, who holds the whole world, omnipotent, who created everything visible and invisible in heaven and in earth (Gen. 1, 20; Neh. 9. Rom. 1.20). We believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, the one Son of the Father, who was with Him before the Creation of the world. Light begotten of Light, True God begotten of True God, not Created. He is equal with the Father. There is nothing in heaven and earth which exists without Him. Mt. 3,17, Jn. 1.1,4. For us and for the salvation of men He came down from heaven; by the operation of the Holy Spirit He put on flesh of the holy Virgin Mary and became man. In the time of Pontius Pilate He was crucified for us, suffered and died and was buried, and on the third day He was separated from the dead and rose, and with glory He ascended to heaven and sat on the right hand of His Father, and He shall come again in honour and glory that He may judge the living and the dead, and there is no finish, no end of His Kingdom. And we believe in one Holy church, which is over all, the assembly and congregation of the Apostles, Eph. 2. 19, 20, 22. And we believe in one Baptism, that it was given for the forgiveness of sin. We began this week on Monday in fasting and in
prayer, walking slowly and solemnly with our Lord
through the final days of His earthly life. We knelt
in prostration. We washed feet. We stood at the

look away.

We gather tonight to celebrate the most glorious event in all of history: the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. The tomb is empty. Death has been defeated. And we, His people, gather to proclaim that victory together with one voice.

Today is Good Friday โ€” แˆตแ‰…แˆˆแ‰ต โ€” the most solemn day of the Orthodox Christian year.

We gather from the break of dawn until the fall of evening โ€” twelve full hours of prayer and prostration โ€” to honour the suffering and crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was on this day that He was nailed to the Cross, that He bore the weight of every sin, every sorrow, and every broken heart โ€” and chose to remain there, out of love for us.

We invite every member of our community to come and be present, for as much of this sacred day as you are able. No amount of time is too little. Come for an hour. Come for the morning. Come for the afternoon. The doors are open and the prayers are continuous.
