Am Echad was started in 1984 to keep Canada together and work towards signing the Canadian constitution.
It failed.
Justin Trudeau cancelled it in 2016, the first thing he did, after Brian Mulroney granted it private foundational status in 1984.
Am Echad ironically stands for constitutional status as a separate country or state, whichever Ontario chooses, after serving west and east so long and forgetting itself in the centre.
Enough words.
Time for action from Ontario now!

Canada Lands Company is pleased to announce that on October 24, 2024, the Company submitted to the City of Toronto its Downsview West District Plan application for a project that will create one of the largest new transit-oriented communities in Toronto’s history.

Downsview West is one of four districts within Canada Lands’ Downsview Lands portfolio that aims to transform the area adjacent to one of the largest parks in the Greater Toronto Area: the much-loved Downsview Park. The district also benefits from higher-order transit options such as the Downsview Park TTC/GO stations.

Delivering diverse housing options within walking distance of transit

The Downsview West development will include much needed diverse housing options that are within walking distance of public transit, including:
20 per cent of homes will be designated for affordable housing – one of the largest commitments from a single development application in City of Toronto history.
30 hectares (74 acres) will deliver 8,800 homes to approximately 17,000 residents.
Approximately 40 per cent of homes will be designed as two and three-bedroom units, catering to diverse households, including families.

Building sustainable and low carbon communities

Downsview West targets net-zero operations by 2040, aimed to minimize carbon emissions.
Most residents will live within a 5-minute walk from higher-order public transit options to support the goal of having 75 per cent of trips taken by walking, cycling and transit.
Downsview West will feature over one kilometre of off-street pedestrian and cycling paths, along with vibrant and complete streets.
The district will have 3.8 hectares (9.3 acres) of parks and open spaces that exceed the Planning Act requirements – including a Green Infrastructure system that uses rainwater as a resource.

Indigenous Placekeeping with the Aanikoobijiganag Miikana

An exciting aspect of the development is the Aanikoobijiganag Miikana (Ancestors’ trail): an 800-metre pedestrian route that will connect Downsview Park TTC/GO stations to Downsview Park. This route will feature an Indigenous-inspired public realm design, art installations and architecture that will allow for Indigenous storytelling.
Indigenous placekeeping concepts developed through extensive engagement with Rightsholders and Indigenous communities will be brought to life by the Indigenous landscape architecture firm, Trophic Design.

As part of this exciting new milestone, a new Downsview West website has also been developed, stay tuned on all the latest developments, review some of our resources, or learn more about the rich history and stories of the Downsview area. We also invite you to share your own Downsview story directly on our website.

October 6 will forever be the YOM KIPPUR WAR to me, not 10/6.
As I started to study to be a rabbi the September before, my resolve only deepened with the Saturday Yom Kippur attack.

Now with Yom Kippur again on Shabbat this week I remember October 7th for the massacre we suffered.

But like 1973, I think it should be remembered as the Simchat Torah Massacre, not the secular date it is associated with.

911 is really a clever heist of Tisha bAv, the destruction of temples.

When we start to call 911 its real name, TISHA BAV, and 10/7 the SIMCHAT TORAH MASSACRE, we will grasp the religious response to paganism, not the debatable response to weaponized politics.

Names matter.
