Interserve Canada

Interserve Canada Interserve is a global community of ordinary Christians who share God's love in practical, wholistic ways among the peoples of Asia and the Arab World.

We are ordinary Christians putting our faith in action. Interserve Partners live and work among the most marginalized peoples of the Arab world and Asia, both in their home countries and among diaspora in Canada. We work as doctors, teachers, baristas and more. Motivated by Christ’s heart of compassion, and in partnership with His church, we share our skills and experience to change tomorrow by wh

at we do today. Love in action. Work that impacts all areas of life. The gospel of Jesus Christ brings good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed, healing of the sick and demonstrates God’s love for the whole world. Our faith in God becomes action when we follow in Jesus’ footsteps. Come walk with us, Go Love the world!

We are humbled to share this beautiful tribute to a true pioneer in global mission and healthcare — Dr. Helen Huston, a remarkable Alberta-born doctor whose life reflected Jesus’ love in action.

For 32 years, “Dr. Helen” served the people of western Nepal, bringing medical care to communities where a doctor had never been seen. From delivering babies to performing life-saving surgeries, she helped establish the Amp Pipal Hospital and brought healing to hundreds of thousands.

Called by God from rural Alberta, Helen served with quiet courage and deep humility, remembered not only for her skill but for her compassion and faith.Though widely recognized for her work, Helen remained humble, believing the honor always belonged to God.

Though she has now passed from this life into the presence of Jesus, her legacy continues to speak. May her story stir our hearts to faithful obedience, sacrificial service, and trust in God’s calling — wherever He leads.

Thank you, Dr. Helen, for a life poured out in love.

“Remember that God has equipped you with skills throughout your life, and he can use them in cross-cultural work ahead. Don’t limit yourself by thinking, “I’m not an X, so there’s no place for me.” Be open to flexibility and even to reinventing yourself in a new context. What you expect to do before you go may be quite different from what you end up doing once you’re there, but God is in it all, weaving your unique skills and experiences into the work he has prepared for you.”

“Just because a people group is considered ‘unreached’ it does not mean they cannot be reached. Reach out with love and dignity. Even if you learn language and can connect and speak fluently, your efforts will fall short without love and dignity. We’re called to love people, not run projects.”

“Living cross-culturally is not a paid vacation. It is difficult and sometimes lonely, but it is also fun and rewarding. For me it is living life, but in a different language and culture. I found this cross-cultural transition to be like going from being a full-grown, functioning adult to being like an infant again (having to re-learn things and not always getting things right).”

“One of the most important things about cross-cultural work is to have a close personal relationship with God, and along with that – keep on learning about how to use your spiritual armour in the cultural context you are in.”

“Read up on autism as going to a new culture is a bit like willingly becoming autistic and being willing to have years and years of not getting all the social cues and not understanding everything around you and making mistakes and trying to be humble and keep trying in the midst of errors. God can be glorified in our willingness to follow Him but we will get many things wrong.”
