Standing in Grace

"Through him we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand."
— Romans 5:2

What does it mean to stand in God's grace?

It means you do not have to earn God's love.

It means you do not have to prove your worth.

It means you do not have to wonder whether God welcomes you.

Through Jesus Christ, God has already opened the door.

Standing in grace does not mean life is easy. We still face disappointments, struggles, grief, and uncertainty. But it does mean that we face those things knowing that God is with us and that his love for us does not change.

Paul reminds us that God loved us long before we had everything figured out. In fact, "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

So wherever this week finds you, celebrating, struggling, grieving, hoping, or simply trying to make it through another day... remember where you stand.

Not in fear.

Not in shame.

Not in uncertainty.

You stand in the grace of God.

Prayer

Gracious God, thank you for your love that welcomes us and your grace that holds us. Help us to live this week with confidence, hope, and peace, knowing that we belong to you. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

🌿 Weekly Devotional: In the Arena

"It is not the critic who counts..." So begins Theodore Roosevelt's famous reflection on the person who enters the arena rather than watching safely from the sidelines.

When I read Matthew 9:9–26, I am reminded of that image.

The Pharisees stand at a distance, criticizing Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. They observe. They evaluate. They judge.

But everyone else in the story is in the arena.

Matthew leaves his tax booth and follows Jesus.

A woman suffering for twelve years pushes through a crowd in hope of healing.

A grieving father falls at Jesus' feet and begs for his daughter's life.

None of them have it all together. None of them are strong. None of them are certain.

What they have is need.

And that is enough.

Jesus says, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick."

Faith is rarely neat and polished. It is lived in the dust and sweat of everyday life. It is found in hospital rooms, difficult conversations, financial struggles, grief, uncertainty, and prayers whispered through tears.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus does not wait for us to become strong enough before he welcomes us. He meets us right in the middle of the arena.

This week, wherever life finds you, do not be afraid to bring your need to Christ.

The people who received healing in Matthew 9 were not the ones who had everything figured out.

They were the ones who came to Jesus.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Bert

🌿 Weekly Devotional | Rise & Build 🌿

Sometimes the world can feel heavy.

There is anger.
Division.
Fear about the future.
Rising costs.
Loneliness.
And a constant pressure to become cynical or exhausted.

But perhaps one of the most defiant things Christians can do is choose joy anyway.

Not shallow denial.
Not pretending problems do not exist.
But a deep decision to notice goodness, beauty, love, and grace even in difficult times.

To laugh with friends.
To share meals.
To sit in the sun.
To enjoy creation.
To encourage someone.
To worship.
To give thanks.
To notice the people around us as gifts from God instead of obstacles to our happiness.

The kingdom of God is not built only through arguments and activism.
It is also built through joy.

Joy reminds the world that darkness does not win.
Joy reminds us that God is still present.
Joy gives weary people strength to keep loving, serving, building, and hoping.

This summer at St. Andrew’s, our theme is:
“Rise and Build.”

And over the next number of weeks, we are going to reflect on small ways we can help rebuild hope, community, compassion, and faithfulness in our homes and neighbourhoods.

Maybe this week, one small act of rebuilding is simply this:
slow down,
notice beauty,
share joy,
and give thanks to God for the people and gifts already around you.

Sometimes joy itself is a way of pushing back the darkness.

It was wonderful to celebrate Dan and Rose’s wedding day with them. We pray God’s richest blessings on their life together as they begin this new chapter — that their home would be filled with love, joy, peace, and faithfulness in the years ahead.
