The First Lady follows Efrat Tilma, one of Israel’s first openly transgender women. After enduring violence and discrimination, she lived in European exile for decades before returning to Israel in 2005. The film traces her journey from underground clubs to prominent LGBTQ+ activism and police volunteering. It has been characterized as “direct, honest, funny, and painful,” by Time Out Tel Aviv, and “a masterful, striking, and breathtaking film,” by Mako.

Efrat Tilma will be the guest at this screening. See link in our bio for more information and tix.

The festival of Shavuot, beginning tomorrow evening, is one of the Shalosh Regalim. It celebrates the giving and receiving of Torah at Mount Sinai. But this is a reframing of the holiday by Talmudic Rabbis. Shavuot began as an ancient agricultural festival that marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest.

These 2 traditions—agricultural and giving of Torah—are combined in the story of Ruth, one of five Megillot in the K’tuvim portion of the Hebrew Bible. Ruth harvested the remnants of Boaz’s wheat fields to feed herself and Naomi. And Ruth, born a Moabite, joined the Israelites and accepted Torah. For these reasons, the Book of Ruth is traditionally read on Shavuot.

Ruth is today’s Jewish women crush wednesday. She is admired for her courage, faith and loyalty in pursuing a vision for her own destiny.

WHB is thrilled to co-present the Canadian premiere of the US film THAT’S HOW YOU MAKE A TORAH, at the 2026 Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

June 11 @ 5:30 PM in person
June 19 - 21 online

Men have been scribing Torahs since 3 BCE, but the first Torah written by a woman only happened in 2007. In this documentary short, meet two of the first known female scribes in history, discover the social and physical obstacles that they overcame to achieve this goal, and - as a Jewish woman - how their wisdom and Torah affect the filmmaker personally.
