St. Thomas's Anglican Church, Toronto

St. Thomas's Anglican Church, Toronto St. Thomas’s Church is an Anglo-Catholic parish in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Thomas's Anglican Church is a parish of the Anglican Church of Canada.

One of the earliest Anglo-Catholic congregations in Canada, it was established in 1874, moving twice before settling into its present building in the Annex neighbourhood, on the western edge of the University of Toronto's downtown campus. A beautiful red brick Arts and Crafts building designed in 1892-93 by parishioner and renowned Toronto architect Eden Smith, the building was intended to be a te

mporary structure until the parish could afford a larger stone building. However, this structure has now served the community for more than a century. Thomas's houses a number of architectural treasures, including historical stained glass windows, a First World War memorial baptistery, and a stunning reredos behind the high altar, which displays hand-carved statues of nine saints associated with the parish’s growth and role in the Anglican Church in Toronto. Thomas's also has a wonderful collection of treasured church vestments and vessels. The parish has been, from its earliest days, at the forefront of the liturgical and musical life of the Anglican Church of Canada. The Eucharist is the central act of worship every Sunday and is celebrated daily throughout the year. Excellent choral and organ music are vital components of the liturgy. There are four services each Sunday: 8:00 a.m. Low Mass (BCP); 9:30 a.m. Sung Mass (BAS); 11:00 a.m. High Mass (BCP); 5:00 p.m. Evensong and Devotions (BCP). See the website for service details, weekday mass times, and livestream links: www.stthomas.on.ca.

Today in the Anglican Church of Canada we celebrate the feast of Archbishop John Charles Roper (d. 1940) who prior to his elevation to the episcopate was vicar of St. Thomas’s from 1888-1897. The Arts & Crafts St. Thomas’s building by Eden Smith was erected in 1893 during his tenure. He is depicted in the triptych by Suan-Seh Foo above the Lady Altar, and the parish has the restored Roper Coper & Mitre. Archbishop Shane Parker wore the cope at Candlemas when he came to preach. Archbishop Parker was Bishop of Ottawa at the time of his election as primate of the national church, and Archbishop Roper was a predecessor as bishop of that diocese.

It was wonderful to have Bishop Kevin Robertson with us for Pentecost, as our preacher at Sung Mass and High Mass, and for confirmation and reception of candidates into the Anglican Communion during High Mass. We also celebrated the success of the parish phase of the Cornerstone Campaign -- we have exceeded our target in this phase! There's more to do to make the Accessibility Atrium a reality, but today was about taking a moment to celebrate together.
