What does it take to prepare for ministry in a changing Church?

For Grace Rockett, the answer has included classrooms, parish ministry, clinical chaplaincy, northern ministry, and a background in musical theatre.

An AFC bursary helped support Grace’s Master of Divinity studies at Trinity College, University of Toronto, as she prepared for ordained ministry in the Diocese of Toronto.

Her formation has taken her from intensive parish work at St. Peter and St. Simon the Apostle in Toronto, to Clinical Pastoral Education at St. Joseph’s Health Care in Hamilton, to a placement at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Dawson City, Yukon.

Along the way, Grace has drawn on her background in the arts to think creatively about worship, communication, accessibility, and community.

“Church is most alive when people feel seen, welcomed, and encouraged to bring their gifts forward,” she says.

Grace’s story is part of AFC’s October Membership Month series, highlighting how investment in theological education and leadership helps prepare people to serve the Church with imagination, compassion, and adaptability.

As Toronto-based theologian and social justice activist Mary Jo Leddy puts it, gratitude “awakens the imagination to another way of being, to another kind of economy, the great economy of grace in which each person is of infinite value and worth.” What could that “economy of grace” look like? This year’s diocesan Outreach & Advocacy Conference, coming up online next Saturday, Oct. 17, addresses that question.

In July, the first delegation from the Diocese of Toronto visited our sister Diocese of Brasilia. "It was a greatly transforming trip that opened our eyes and minds to understand that the partnership is not an accident, but a blessing for our journeys and pilgrimages," writes the Rev.
